Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Rich, full, malty aroma, dark fruits abound along with notes of milk chocolate, faint cherry, vanilla, banana, walnut, toffee and an underlying tobacco earthiness. Unusually deep, dark mahogany color, filtered, with a fine, slight head and stippled lace. Flavor is predominantly sugary and fruity, with some dark breadiness up front, then drenched with toffeeish and caramel sweetness, while towards the long finish notes of licorice, raisin, butterscotch and plum emerge. Full bodied to be sure, palate is thin and smooth, the effervescence low. An excellent choice for a nightcap or dessert. Not quite as remarkable as I recall the original Kulmbacher Reichelbrau product being, but it has been several years, of course. Cheers, Jeff.

First Eisbock I have tried. Pours a dark brown with a small tan, quickly diminishing head. Unique taste, almost caramel with a bit of chocolate. I wasn’t expecting much as I got a single of this for 2.99 but it was a damn good beer.

Very dark, though clear, with a quickly diminishing, sizzling head. Nose is quite sweet, full of caramel, melanoid notes, and notable alcohol. Flavor is sweet and rich with a pleasant dry bitterness. Plummy, slightly chocolatey, wonderful. Mouthfeel is just slightly thin and a bit overly effervescent.

2003 vintage. Dark, ruby body with light carbonation and thin, loose, soapy, gray head. Nice complex aroma of cherries, figs, molasses, prunes, roasted nuts, and chocolate. Huge malty-cola with dried fruit elements, but considerably less pruny than the Aventinus Eisbock. Appealing as a sipper. Palate is thick and sticky like warm syrup, but nice and appealing. Very solid and enjoyable all-around. I'd love to try one of these after extended cellaring.

330ml bottle brewed 10/22/04. Deep brown color. Large sized white foamy head, with long lasting lacing. Aroma is brown sugar, molasses, fruit and malt. A medium bodied Eisbock. Malts are sweet with lots of brown sugar and molasses flavors, some breadyness. Soft flavors, little to no carbonation presence. Hints of chocolate and vanilla. Perhaps a little thin in the mouth, but that may be due to the lack of carbonation. Nice beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

A dark clear brown bock with an extra thick light moka head. A pleasant molasse aroma with notes of figs and raisins. In mouth, a sweet burned caramel, raisines, stewed prunes, torrefied coffee, and surprising alcohol, hitting you in finale. A siple delectable eisbock. Bottle from BOTW, Nov. 2006.
