Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

11.2 oz. Aroma dark malts almost burnt, light anise and toffee. Pour is really nice dark brown almost black with a nice creamy tan head. Flavor is good sweet and salty with a tinge of burnt toffee and some dark fruit. Palate is good not too thin and not really heavy either. Overall this is a nice starter to the day.

A Mes rate: Bottle at Ølfestival 2007. My first beer of the festival (seeing as Sim managed to pinch my Ølfabrikken Ekstra!) One of those I have just never got round to trying. Glad I did eventually. Barley wine looks with a good tan head. Very wheaty and more barley in the nose. Typical strong German bock in the mouth. Strong dark and powerful. Chunky and fruity with plenty of hops showing. Strong, dark and powerful with a great creamy palate. Great start.

Bottle (330ml). Poured deep clear mahogany with a large foamy-creamy light brown head. Initially a little sour, but the roast caramel malt and moss come out, lots of spice, brown sugar and a hint of evergreen hops and sour cream. Taste of burnt caramel malt, with mossy winter forest notes. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy - I really like this style, this isn’t the best I’ve had, but very solid.

11.2 oz bottle. Deep dark reddish brown pour. Brown, quickly dispersing head. Strong aromas of malt with some molasses and brown sugary notes underneath. Slight vinous aromas as well. Bold, sweet malty flavors in a medium thick body. Some chocolatelike flavors emerge as it warms, as well as some dense dark fruit flavors. My first Eisbock... Wow! Some see the label as flashy/cheesy, but it scores extra points with me, I like it.

1996 bottle consumed in 2007. Clear dark amber/brown body with a medium-sized tan head, fading. The nose lightly sweet and vinous with oxidized port, toffee and prunes. the flavor is lightly sweet with cherry, fruit punch, toffee and red grape skins. Medium/full body is very soft with light, gentle carbonation.

Bottle: Dark brown pour, small tan head. Aroma is very sweet, molasses, dark fruits. Flavor sweet malts, alcohol is subdued, but you know it’s there. Thick and syrupy on the palate. Good stuff.

Bottle -- and what a bottle. These guys better rethink their packaging, or else between that silver bling label, the "Eis"beer name, and the 9.2 ABV they’re likely to find themselves <a href="http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/l ">banned in Seattle along with a lot of similarly packaged "Ice" beers. Unless, of course, our governing protectors of civic mores actually bother to taste this one. Once out of the bottle, this one is nothing like any of the high-octane swill on the ban list.

The beer pours a beautiful deep brown with ruby highlights and a light tan head; it looks so nice that I’ll give it a 5 on appearance and pretend I never saw the bottle. The aroma is plums and dried fruit and molassas, some alchohol, vinous notes. The flavor is moderately sweet and decidedly rich - again molassas and dark fruit, hints of roast chocolate. The mouthfeel is creamy and thick but smooth with little alcohol burn considering the 9.2% ABV.

A very nice eisbock!
