Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Deep classic Bock nose(to me this means: a little sharp, cold, metallic tones like the smell of cheap white sugar). But this beer has an incredible deep nose of warmth as well: dried fruits, most distinctly figs, but also raisins, plums and prunes. Brown sugar and the warmth of alcohol is also very apparent; The body is medium full and very, very well balanced, with all elements apparent (sweet, sour, bitter, salty); The finish is long and complex with lots of malt, sweetness and a little bitterness. Great beer, but Bocks are very special!

Pours a very dark garnet color with some clarity and a moderately full, beige, creamy head which settles quickly to a small frothy layer leaving some nice lace. Nose is rich but faint for an eisbock; toasted caramels, chocolate, light notes of date, and some light roasted almond notes. Flavor is big and rich like it should be with rich toffee, toasted caramel, light molasses notes, dates, roasted almonds, and some hints at chicory. Palate is nearly full, almost lively, and somewhat viscous but still somewhat crisp. Finishes quickly with lingering toasted caramels and roasted almonds and only the slightest warmth. Bitterness is almost non-existant but never becomes cloyingly sweet. Not as big or sweet as I was expecting but quite drinkable and certainly pleasant. Lots of rich notes but still the crispness of a lager.

This beer is beautiful in its appearance. It pours a dark red/brown/black, with a off-white head that fizzles after a minute or two. The aroma is beautiful also. The aroma is alcohol, malts, candy sugar, plums. This aroma is very enticing. The flavor is malty, alcohol, fruity. The finish starts sweet, then fades to a pleasing warming from the alcohol. This is my first eisbock, and I love it.

0.33 l bottle. Mahagony color with creamy head. Malty, bready, berryish, caramelly, toffeish and a bit vinous aroma. Sweet, malty and caramelly flavor with toffee, raisins and warming alcohol. Balanced and pleasant.

Bottle. Pours clear dark brown with a big off-whit head. The aroma has a fantastic and sweet wort-like, grainy German maltiness with tones of caramel, sweet juicy dark bread, almond paste, maple syrup, light roast, caramelized nuts and dark fruits like prunes and sugar sweaty figs. The woody alcohol notes are notable - yet surprisingly soft. Some grassy and mild herbal hops are also present. Cocoa milk. The flavour is massive malty with an alcohol sting to back it up. Tones of caramel, oatmeal cookies, sweet wort, grass and herbs. The flavour is maple sweet but the alcohol dries out the beer on the finish. Light to medium sweet. The mouthfeel is fat, syrupy and chewable with a nice smallish carbonation. The aftertaste is of dark fruits, wort, brown sugar and a light hoppy touch. Medium to full bodied.

Best eisbock I’ve had (though I certainly haven’t had many). A nicely dark pour, with a gem-like glow in the middle, and a substantive head. Smells very much like a port, and even has some of the consistency thereof - figs, raisins, a touch of anise. But the sweet malts are balanced by that slight alkie burn that’s distinctive to this style, giving it a real sipper’s quality. Good stuff.
