Clear but opaque dark reddish-brown pour with a thick, foamy persistant light tan head. Toasty and strong nose of cherry, plum, oak, sherry and milk chocolate. Amazingly strong flavor of coffee, especially late, raisins, cocoa and caramelly sweetness. Finishes very strong, with a note of alcohol. This is a keeper, although couldn’t drink too many of these! | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 12, 2004 Rich malty aroma - caramel and toffee, dark toast, dark dried fruits, slight sherry-like notes, and a touch of alcohol. Dark brown with ruby tints, thin tan head dissipated quickly. Incredilbly smooth malt flavor, sweet with strong caramel notes and a hint of chocolate. Full-bodied with a thick syrupy finish, just the slightest bit of alcohol warming. This beer is simply outstanding. kujo9 (1077), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA

Room Temp. Hogwash!!!!!! Pours a deep mohagany w/ fantastic ruby highlights and a lasting cream colored, thick, head. Deeply malty! Toasted and bready malts, some slight smokiness(probably due to age), and a raisiny dark fruit character that have melded together wonderfully! Some hints of alcohol in the nose. Well balanced and port like in the flavor, but lightly so. Clean, lightly oxidized, but it adds to complexity of palate. Some dark raisiny fruity flavors, heavily malty with toasted malts and hints of deep caramel character that adds to the raisiny flavor. Hints of alcohol, but clean otherwise. Finish is malty and caramelized raisins, aftertaste has hints of roast. Full bodied, medium carbonation, and smooth. Alcohol is barely, and I mean barely evident. Wow!! If this stuff is over theh hill, sign me up for old age!!!!! Very nicely complex brew. 10.99/Six, I’m going to get the other 6 tomorrow!!!! omnivore (270), San Francisco, California, USA

Smells oaky and sweet. Deep burn oak flavor that eases off the tongue to finish with a woody bitterness. matta (1139), Tampa, Florida, USA

Caramel, dark chocolate, coffee, molasses malt (H); prune, port, brown sugar, soy sauce aromas. Mostly black body with hints of a deep brown holds a creamy but small and diminishing head. Heavily sweet, very lightly acidic flavor becomes a moderately sweet, lightly bitter finish. Full body, creamy/oily texture, lively carbonation. The bottom line is: great malt flavors, huge nose, excellent mouthfeel. This, my friends, is a barnburner! SledgeJr (2962), Omaha, Nebraska, USA

Outrageously smooth for a beer with this level of ethanol! Fruity in a raisin/plum maltiness way. Rich tan head atop a dark brown bier. This seems to have a little harsher palate in the bottle. I just can’t believe this is so strong in the draft version. Super sweet, but so strong that it does not seem out of whack. Yum. sneagrams3 (1757), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 9, 2005 330 ml bottle. Deep dark brown, almost black hue. Opaque with a good amount of tan head. Nose is very alcoholic, with a sweetness. Aromas of raisins, apricots, prunes, resin, toffee, slight coffee, chocolate, port, and burnt sugar. Rich, full and chocolately in the mouth. Sugary and sweet, with the alcohol burn as a finisher. Plums and port, chocolate and pine. Fantastic lingering mouthfeel of sweet burnt sugar, breadiness, licorice, and a cloying syrupy flavor. And to boot, a nice piney, hop bitter finish. I still remember the first one I ever had. Still just as delicious. Right on!
