markas101 (541), Fargo, North Dakota, USA Nov 5, 2009 50 cl bottle as pictured, Fargo, ND, USA. Thick foamy head (maybe a result of my bad pour). Heavily roasted hazelnut aroma with coffee and sweet caramel. Smooth, medium body, sweet cola-like taste with a very sweet cherry tinged finish. joeyplush (328), Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 30, 2009 Dark malt and caramel aroma. Dark brown and tan head, roasted malt, creamy finish. Lingering roasted malt flavor on the palate. This is a very solid beer. sfontain (506), Columbus, Ohio, USA Oct 30, 2009 Dark reddish brown; thick, creamy, tan head. Sour aroma of dirt, caramel, malt, and roast; maybe a touch of vanilla. Nice flavor with caramel and coffee and smoke, and perhaps some dark fruit. Mouthfeel is medium-thin but perhaps appropriate for the style. Not my favorite style but actually really (surprisingly) solid all the same. SHIG (2012), Aviano, Italy Oct 25, 2009 Draught: Poured a light black with a tan color thick foamy head. Aroma is sweet with roasted malt. Taste is roasted malt with a nice bitter metallic to keep it balanced. Elwood (647), Leesburg, Virginia, USA Oct 25, 2009 Serving: Draft.
Appearance: Very dark brown with a large, light tan head. Good head retention and good lacing.
Aroma: Slightly sour, vegetal nose with some dark, roasted notes.
Flavor: Woody with notes of earth, smoke, and malt. It has a nice back bitterness. A pleasing change from the nose.
Palate: Medium carbonation with a medium, dry mouthfeel and a medium finish.
Overall: I liked the dry, woody notes in this one. I could certainly throw back a few of these. drjay44 (757), Salida, Colorado, USA Oct 19, 2009 500 ml. swing top bottle. Pours a thick light tan head, of long duration, with extensive lacing, over a clear, dark brown (SRM 26) body.....nose is medium malts with some coffee, bit of chocolate, spice hop....taste is medium roasted malts with cereal, light coffee, light cocoa, finishing with mild bitterness of roasted malt with a hop addition, dry throughout....mouth feel is light to medium, carbonation medium. This meets the style almost perfectly, with both nose and taste being spot on. This is an attractive flavorful beer, which is light enough to consume in vast quantities. Hermod (245), Vantaa, Finland Oct 13, 2009 50cl bottle, Alko. Amber, brown color. Nice frothy white head. Roasted malt aroma, taste of caramel and cocoa, well balanced sweetness. A nice schwarzbier. Sdaniel90 (9), Estado de México, Mexico does not count Oct 12, 2009 Bottle, 500ml. Reddish, copper colour, pours a great big light brown head with medium length. Plenty of carbonation going on. Nice roasted flavour, low bitterness. Pretty underwhelming actually. In a word: Disappointing, I expected more!
