Poured a dark almost black that had a strangely purple accent to it against light. I think this was caused by the coloring of the bottom of the glass it was served in. Aroma was sweet with a touch of raisins. Sweet, with a bitter touch of hops before a potent dark malt body that had just a whiff of smoke in it. Finish was smooth and crisp. I found that my enjoyment was enhanced further when I was drinking it with the spicy peppery beef dish I consumed with it! BeerBlockaid (538), Jacksonville, Florida, USA

Rich roasted dark malts dominate the nose and lead into a taste blended with subtle chocolates, some cream, and licorice. Smokey overhaul leads for an ample chewy brew despite it being a bit thin. loverly brew. PilsnerPeter (2617), Flushing, New York, USA

Smooth and creamy with a flavor that is bombarded with a thick & chewy malt character, balanced with a smooth and nonabrasive touch of hops and has a long pleasant finish with a kilned like burnt flavor of dry chocolate malts. Nice beer. dwyerpg (2537), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Jul 28, 2006 Kind of a soapy aroma, but a nice red-brownish appearance. An interesting beer, a little dryness in the head, but the taste seems a little off to me (my mom liked this better than trappiste rochefort!). A little smokiness. cbkschubert (1993), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA

Has a light grain, toasted aroma. Nice roasted malt flavor. Thin body, but very smooth. Very nice beer. ontario102 (794), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 13, 2006 Clean roasty and toasty but slightly metallic aroma; tight, creamy head; smooth, mild, slightly nutty flavor with a dry, lightly chalky finish; rather subtle but definitive chocolate hint; slightly metallic. Quite drinkable and tasty. jasonp (1510), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Jul 12, 2006 Dark clear brown/mahogany with a thick, light beige head. Noble hops and some peat in the nose. Flavor has notes of caramel sweetness, smoke, grassy herbal hops, chocolate and roastiness. Very well balanced. Thin body with a watery texture and subtle carbonation - this was the only aspect of the beer I didn’t enjoy. Head retention is ok, a thin coating of lacing hangs on the glass. Quite drinkable. Overall, solid tasty stuff.
