(Kloster Schwarz-bier Mönchshof 4,7%) On-tap. Light and brittle foam, insufficient persistence. Strongly bitter and alcoholic scent, a lot unbalanced and overbearing. Dry and arid taste, bitter, nearly a medicinal. Medium fizz and duration. Long and little pleasant end. Not much refreshing.

Clear, dark copper body and a fast fading grayish white head. Lots of Munich malt in the nose plus some roasty cocoa and an earthy character. Flavor is lightly sweet and focused on the darker malts with some roasted fruit and a significantly bitter, drying finish. Quite dry and a little over bitter for my liking.

Sampled from bottle. Pours an incredibly clear, dark brown with a red tint. Lacing and head are both frothy & tan in color. Aroma is woody, and earthy with notes of chocolate. Flavor is balanced and features wood, smoke, caramel and coffee. Dry finish. Medium-bodied and lightly carbonated. A very drinkable beer.

Flip-top bottle. Very dark brown beer with a tan head. Nice aroma of dark malts. Flavor is roasted dark malts, smoke, chocolate, and a light hop bitterness. Slightly acidic and tingly in the mouth . Dry finish. Fairly good and drinkable.

Pop-top bottle. Pours a deep, deep red with a full head. Cocoa aroma with a smidge of anise on the tongue. Maybe too creamy in the mouth for what I like in a schwarzbier. I would take Kostritzer over this but still an excellent example of the style.

Smells very clean, almost lager-like. Pours dark brown to black, with a nice white head. Crisp yet some small notes of roasted malt and chocolate. Palate is very light and thin. Redlight Redlight’s got the flip-top bottles
