Commercial Description:
In the little town of Bavay, only a few miles from the border with Belgium, the Theillier family has crafted its fine bière de garde for generations. The charming brewery is built into the Theillier family home, which was constructed in the 1600’s on sturdy Roman foundations. La Bavaisienne is artfully brewed, in very small batches, using a resourceful combination of ancient and modern equipment.

Pours a pretty, clear, copper color. It is well carbonated and supports a prodigious tan head. The aroma is sharp and spicy with some herbal notes as well as some malty ones too. The aroma is a good marriage between malt, hops, and yeast aromatics. My first impression of the taste is that this definitely hits the spot. It is light and flavorful, perfect for a hot summer evening. This has some nice sharp spicy notes that hit the front of my tongue; these are a nice balance to the malty sweetness that is also found in this beer. The malty sweetness has a depth of flavor, which really contributes to the overall character of this beer. I get flavor notes that are spicy, herbal, sweet and a certain caramel maltiness. While I would be hesitant to call this a stellar beer, the integrated flavors really meld very well together. This is certainly a well crafted beer, and one which I highly recommend.

Bottle. Amber, big head. Barnyard-blanket kind of a smell that I really liked, but the taste was a bit flat.

Pours a nice orange/amber, very translucient with tiny bubbles and a white head that leaves some nice lacing. Very fruity, malty taste, with some caramel, earthy and bready.

Really beautiful in the glass, bright, brilliant clear amber with a huge chunky, puffy head. Nose mildly funky and grassy, noticeable yeasts. Very bready and yeasts, has a rich, buttery character to it. Yeasty and a bit spicy, a bit like a tripel with some barnyard in it.

Brewtopia 2004: Clear orange with a huge rocky head. Spicy aroma with yeasty character. Fizzy mouthfeel, medium bodied. Ends slightly sweet and spicy.

Honey-butter, pepper (light), big head diminishing, golden-copper color, very deep and translucent. Taste: supper nutty! Peanuts...cashews, aftertaste of hops. Slight butter flavor, slight crystallized sweetness. Something indescribable that is a great pleasure. Oakes says something about this beer being a lesson in malt extraction....ooh I would have to agree. Layers upon layers. This is sublime. Where can I get more?

Golden amber with a small white head. Upon sniffing my thought was of baby spring greens and salad vegetables. Mouthfeel was medium, velvety, good carbonation. Flavor was earthy, herbal, some spice. Interesting beer.

Bottle. Very nice stuff. Starts off malty and toasty, with a subtle wheat flavour. Finishes off very farmy, savoury and herbal. Hay, dirt, horseblanket, earthy hops. Slight smoky edge. Orange rind and spicey hops to finish, savoury, this is a really good beer.
