Poured bubbly clear deep mahogany with a huge lasting foamy-creamy lasting light brown head. Decent generic dubbel aroma of sweet caramel malt, cloves, apple and apricot, a touch metallic and sour, but okay. Taste is mostly caramel malt and strong alcohol, fruit, spice and even a hint of cocoa - this actually finishes pretty bitter. Mouthfeel sharp and a little fizzy. Pretty pedestrian belgian dark strong, best of the three by a small margin. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 6, 2005 Bottle courtesy of Matta. Pours dark mahogany/brown with nice beige head that fades quickly. Highly carbonated. Yeasty dark fruit aroma very muted, slight alcohol tinge. Flavor much the same, some fig, plum like flavors, musty yeastiness and alcohol burn in the finish. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 5, 2005 Pours ruby with a big and very faint tan head. Nose of cocoa, raspberry and light malt vinegar. Sweet with some flemish brown sour notes. Spicey (cinnamon?) with chocolate, and plums with a little brown sugar. Medium roast, decent mouthfeel, but not terrific. Boutip (2390), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 5, 2005 Bottle: Poured a dark color ale with a huge foamy head with pretty good retention. Aroma of strong malt with a lingering feeling from the Belgian yeast. Taste is a mix between sweet roasted malt, light funky yeast and hints of dry raisins and brown sugar. Body is above average with the alcohol well hidden. Very good Belgian ale but missing a bit of complexity to be truly great. rederic (1815), montréal, Quebec, Canada
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 19, 2005 Hazy dark mahogany hue, with some reddish highlights, and a rocky tan-colored head. Fruity nose of figs, raisins, dates, sweet caramelized malt, yeasty, roasted malt and spice aroma follows through on a medium-bodied sweet palate, with sweet caramelized malt, roasted malt, yeasty, fruity accents of figs, raisins, dates, hint of brown sugar, even molasses, with a touch of alcohol warmth and a mild-sweet chocolate note, leading towards an obvious alcoholic strength and finishing with a sweet fruity mellow acidic finish. Fruity malt aroma with hints of wood and booze. Taste is plum booziness with some oak, and malt sweetness. Slight burn in the finish. Pretty good. Eructoblaster (1508), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 10, 2005 Bottle. Dark brown cloudy body with lively carbonation and good beige foamy head. Pleasant malty aroma with fruity, yeasty and chocolate hints. Alcohol is very well hidden. Rich and very well balanced taste that carries spicy, sweet, and fruity (dark cherries) notes. It ends with a nice warming finish. Very enjoyable Strong Ale. wnp22 (682), Toronto (Roncesvalles Village), Ontario, Canada
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/20 | Nov 6, 2005 Tasted in Toronto. Obtained from LCBO, I believe part of the Seasonal raport. 330ml sample (oh well). Tasted in a Chimay trappist glass. Pours a deep red / brown colour. Thin white wispy head. Aroma of candy floss, sweetness and alcohol. Flavour is sweet and what I call ’stingy’. Going down, there is a slight sting, either from the relatively intense sweetness or high ABV.
