The cork pops with a bold ferocity and from there it’s only a positive experience. A very basic brown color is evident, with a tall, thick tan head that lasts to the end of the glass. The aroma from the bottle is highly farmhouse-musty, and from the glass it is extremely mellow, with a rich chocolate mocha malt at the base and a porter-like peatiness in the background. The sip begins with earthy straw tones that meld back into a licorice tinted old-fashioned dark malt extract with some mild citrus-lime notes. At the same time a strong, honest hop bitterness is felt -- not just an undertone on the maltiness but a solid presence in its own right. Alcohol is almost totally hidden but makes a mild, pleasant presence on the finish that is something like a spiked cherry cola. The body of this beer is luxurious and lively like a mint truffle, and the natural carbonation is superb. Take it from someone who’s drunk antique beer from the 1800’s -- this is a very historically accurate, raw brew. MesandSim (5946), London, Greater London, England

Long finish repeating chocolate and hops in the taste. It lingers for a while after swallowing. Lifeless mouthfeel. Jeppe (2638), Ølbutikken, Denmark
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 25, 2005 Pours unclear brown with a golden glow and a thick tan head. Dusty spicy aroma with a herbal edge and some sweet malt. Malt, herb and yeast dominates the flavor with spices and pepper tones. Tastes a bit unclean. Drinkable but nothing to go out of your way for. heemer77 (4311), Savannah, Missouri, USA

This is a very dark beer. The head is a very light brown color. The aroma is herbal with some medicinal quality. There is a little bit of apples and oranges under the medicine. The taste is light apples and some strong herbs like basil and rosemary. There are also some prunes and a little bit of tangerines. There is coffee, but it is faint and in the background. Decent beige head. Lovely fruity almost perfumy nose - coriander? Notes of caramel, raisin and prunes in particular. Pronounced hoppy finish. 170398 MAP (1089), Lakewood, Ohio, USA

Flavor doesnt seem to have as much pizzaz, but turns out to be really smooth. Aside for the small bit of bitterness at the end, this is very mellow. ThomasE (5178), Copenhagen, Denmark
