Commercial Description:
This beer looks like it means business right from the start. It is dark red brown with a good fluffy head and has a rich spicy malt nose with a few bitter orange notes. The palate has a big hoppy bite and a rich, fruity, dark coffee character, which tries to become roasted in the finish.

Pours a brown hue with a nice tan head. Aromas of caramel, honey, a little cocoa and some licorice. Flavors of the same with a nice roasted quality.

Dark amber color; creamy head. Malty aroma, candi sugar, light caramel. Full body, dry malt, quite strong caramel and liquorice; but the best is a delicate note of dry roasted malts. Subtle.
Correctly strong, the final has caramel and sweet liquorice as well. Soft and maybe a bit too much carbonated.

(Bottled) Dark brown color with smallish head. Very malty, slightly roasted, caramely aroma with lots of anise and some orange-peel and dried fruit. Quite sweetish-malty, strongly anisey and bitter flavor. Some coffee and a strong, roasted-malty, slightly spicy and bitter finish. Sugary-malty aftertaste. Medium-bodied, slicky smooth palate with medium carbonation. Alcohol well hidden. A strange, but quite pleasant attempt to combine sweet, anisey abbey dubbel with roasty stout. Some maturing probably wouldn’t hurt this one.

Bottled (labelled Auberge de l’Abbaye Cistercienne Bruna, BB 12/2004)
Dark ruby color, steady off-white head. Aroma has roasted malts and licorice. Medium-bodied. Flavor has dark malts (bread), molasses. Finish has some coffee notes which makes this like dunkel except alcohol gives strong addition to the palate. Interesting and quite complex brew.

Rich malty aroma, caramel and toffee, brown sugar, chocolate, and some bitter chocolate. Light astringent hops. Dark brown-red clear, with thin light tan lacing head. Medium heavy watery body with medium carbonation. Starts malty and sweet, with notes of coffee, licorice, alcohol, and brown sugar. Mild acidity toward the finish, with some dry hops. After is nutty and sweet, with molasses tang and mild licorice bitterness.

Lot # 135376. I found this to be a very easy-drinking and enjoyable beer. From the bottle, the aroma is a yeasty chocolate, with some tar and baked prunes. Deep woody brown , fizzy buff-colored head, poster-art label of cloned, effete carnival revelers. Dead-on medium-weight, most of the finish goes quickly, but there’s a long, subtle chocolate and woody subtext. Flavor is muted cocoa, a bit woody, not sweet or overly bitter -- well balanced and good drinking. The ABV is extremely well masked and only really apparent in the nose, and in the reflexes.

Belgian beer rating #200. Dark brown with a large, but quickly diminishing off white head. Malt & chocolate aroma. Malt, chocolate and fruit, with perfume notes & coconut, slightly sweet. Rich and with a complex flavour profile.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Opaque dark brown colour with lasting tan head. Aroma is toasted malts, dark fruit, liquorice. Nice rich and spicey balanced taste; malty, slightly sweet and with tobacco in the finish. Good stuff.
