Commercial Description:
La Choulette Ambrée is the classic amber version of a French bières de gardes. It has a wonderfully spicy aroma and is fullflavored, but effervescent and refreshing.

Bottle, 33 cl. (via Willems) Clear, dark orange-amber color with off-white, foamy lacing head. Aroma light acidity, hops, fruits, malts . Medium body. Taste bit yeast, sweet malts, fruits. Dry sweet finish.

33 cl bottle. (Best before Aug ’08). Lovely shade of amber-orange with lots of activity but not a lot of head. (And lots of something (?) floating around in there). Medium aroma of malt and dark, dried fruit, especially dates. Very interesting (and strong) taste. The malt and dried fruit are still there, but are joined by brown, slightly bitter spice, and alcohol. Quite complex and full. I’ll try this one again.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Ruddy colour with huge, off-white head. Malty nose with dark fruit, nuts and ginger biscuit spices (ginger, cinamon, cardamom). Malty taste with notes of dark fruit, blood oranges, toffee, chocolate, black-currant and a delicate, spicy bitterness in the finish. Great balance, nice beer.

The pour is a nice amber white a medium white head. The nose is complex with floral, yeast, and hints of sweet vanilla and sugar. The flavor, while lighter than expected has the same complexity. Nice, but I would like to age and try again.

This pours a clear amber body with a tall & creamy eggshell head. There’s a lot going on in the aroma, toffee, a soapy yeastiness, vanilla, light brown sugar, and a slight touch of anise. Add some light brown spices and a soft floral bitterness to the flavor and you have one tasty drink. It finshes on a sweet toffee note with a mild licorice and herbal bitterness. Nice.

My first reaction is wow and eww at the same time. In the aroma is some really amazing brown sugar, toffee, fruit (must), and malt. But there is also bad yeast, leaves, and sulfur. The appearance is amber as it should be with a nice head. The flavor is like the aroma with a wooden finish. The palate is smooth. I don’t know what to think of this one.

a different sort of beer. real fruity in its overall presence. very thin and smooth with its mouth feel. though it has a strong head the carbonation is rather flat. the taste is toffee with fruit. I like it

Pours a light amber-brown with a moderate head with poor retention. Amazingly spicy aroma - very much like a Belgian strong. Full-bodied carmelized malt flavour, notes of alcohol. Warm finish, creamy with decent carb. This was surprising, and much better than any other French beer I’ve tasted.
