leninthedesert (110), Nevada, USA Aug 30, 2008 Very nice pour from La Jolla Brewhouse. Amber-red in color, roasty-toasty malt flavor. Balanced hop flavor in the finish with notes of mellow caramel. Angeloregon (2002), Portland, Oregon, USA May 6, 2008 On tap at La Jolla Brewhouse as an amber--Slick, watery amber-orange body with no head. Fruity, hoppy, sweet nose. Homebrewy, flat, sweet, dull finish. Ibrew2or3 (1756), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Jan 14, 2008 On tap @ the La Jolla Brewhouse brewpub being called simply “Red.” Pours deep clear amber with lasting tan head along with sheet lacing. Nice looking red. The aroma is of roasted malts that beckons me to drink. Smells rich and roasty. The taste has inviting notes of roasted malts, caramelized malts, mild malt astringency and more rich maltiness. It ends with semi sweet caramelized malts and roasted malts that border on being burnt. Tasty. badlizard (1525), San Diego, California, USA Dec 26, 2007 Clear garnet red with a creamy tan head. Caramel aroma and taste with a nutty bitterness and a roasty finish. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Feb 4, 2005 (Draft: Beach House Brewery in La Jolla, CA) This is NOT the same recipe as the historic "Red Roost Ale" as the brewer who made the beer famous left the brewery long ago (and took the recipe with him). Thus, Red Roost Ale will probably never be made again at this establishment. In general, I don’t care for the beers at Beach House, but the La Jolla Red is certainly better than I expected. It’s a very roasty red, fairly bitter, and moderately sweet, but the sweetness stays far in the background. The nose is roasty and mildly hoppy. The palate shows medium body and is very dry despite the lurking sweetness. Deep ruddy brown in color. Light tan head pours to a quarter-inch in height, but quickly dissipates to a broken sheen literally in seconds. One of the better beers I’ve had at Beach House.
