Commercial Description:
La Moneuse is named for A. J. Moneuse (b. 1768), a famous local bandit and gang leader, and ancestor of the brewers' family. It is a classic "saison" beer by virtue of its strength and its earthy, aged quality. It has a hardy, semi-dry malt character, a fresh but not overpowering hoppiness, abundant yeasty, fruity flavors and a fairly strong, but pleasant and enticing mustiness.

Blind tasting at Sombeast’s house

I am not sure if was the fact that my palate was beginning to tire of saisons, but I did not enjoy this particular beer much. Looking at the ratings I think it deserves another inspection so if anyone wants to send me a bottle it is now on my want list. With the score I’ve given it I am a bit skeptical that it was truly that poor. This review is mostly for record keeping’s sake.

Aroma / Appearance - The cloudy orange body left a thin oily head which soon faded away. The nose was very unusual to me - I will need to revisit this with a clean palate to see if it was truly as bad as my notes made it sound. They claim cut wheat, sourness, funk and grassy pears. It did not do much for me at all.

Flavor / Palate - A sweet taste coated the inside of my mouth leaving the feel of granny smith apples on my tongue. The mouthfeel felt slightly overcarbonated and did not do much to interest me in wanting more. I would like to give this one a try again though - a larger sample would certainly either confirm my suspicions or correct my seemingly flawed notes.

750 ml, sampled thanks to drewbeerme. Hazy range in color with a thin white head. Citrus lemon aroma, orange peel, sweet, phenols, grain, candied, alcohol, and a little bit of funkiness. Citrus flavors, orange peel, alcohol, spice, pepper and candied sugar. Pretty decent overall.

Bottled. Poured a deeper caramelly-golden with a medium, creamy white head. Sweeter light fruits in the aroma along with coriander and other spices… bit of candy sweetness, some grains, and heavily yeasty… really enjoyed the smells here! Flavor picked up sweeter light fruit, heavy dustier yeast, and old barn-like funkiness.. mild sourness provides nice accents. Thicker and creamy on the palate with a bit of alcohol bite. This was a great beer!

Saison #9 consumed ’blind’ at the Pewaukee tasting. Slightly orangy yellow, coarse bubbled head that would replenish easily when agitated. Yeasty aroma. Distinct barnyard funk. A little sweetness, a little lingering sourness in the finish.

750ml, pours a gusher but settles into a hazy orange with big white rocky head. nose is very yeasty, sour dough bread, coriander, and flowers. taste is very refreshing, crisp, sweet bread, yeasty, peppery, and did i say refreshing? mouthfeel is full. carbonation is smooth but high. alcohol is very well hidden. tasty stuff.3.9.

another tasting of this beer and i just think it rocks. funky, spicy, and dry and a joy to drink. 4.0.

12/18/07, 750ml bottle, 2005 vintage. this has age nicely, aroma has a nice lemony citrus notes with herbal and earthy notes. not as hoppy or funky but still has some grainy-grassy notes with slightly caramelized hop and malt notes. just a hint of spice in the background. wow this is tasty.3.8.

Poured a hazy orange yellow with a light colored head. There was little aroma possible some yeast. The flavor seemed floral and citrus, finished dry.

Hazy yellow coloured, little carbonation and a small white head. Herby yeasty aroma with some citrus hints, full palate. Finish is dry herby, bitter yeasty.

Fruity yeasty brew, nice but overrated i think. Just a little too metallic and earthy, otherwise no complaints. Dry and sourrish saison with good lemon/citrus tatse.
