Commercial Description:
La Moneuse is named for A. J. Moneuse (b. 1768), a famous local bandit and gang leader, and ancestor of the brewers' family. It is a classic "saison" beer by virtue of its strength and its earthy, aged quality. It has a hardy, semi-dry malt character, a fresh but not overpowering hoppiness, abundant yeasty, fruity flavors and a fairly strong, but pleasant and enticing mustiness.

Pours a slightly hazy orange bronze with a large, frothy, well-lacing white head. Complex sweet, toasty, biscuity malty aroma has a touch of earthy, grassy spice. Body starts full and well-carbonated with a good balance of sweet Belgian crystal malt and drier earthy hop and spice notes. A complex, nicely-balanced and true to style saison.

The cork explodes from the bottle as soon as the cage is loosened, pouring forth quite a bit of ’gunsmoke’ vapors. Very efferevecent beer, the bubbles start climbing up the neck of the bottle as I sit and watch the vapors rise. Once poured, the bubbles stop trying to climb out of the bottle, but in the glass it is 10% beer and 90% foam. It takes a good long time to reduce as it is continually being added to from the bottom by lots of streams of bubbles. The head is thick and creamy, and colored light beige. Great head retention, fantastic lacing. Tart and funky aroma with hay, citrus, and barnyard. The flavor is tart and yet also has a little carmelly sweetness. Nice mixture of flavors, a little funky but less so than the aroma suggested. Hops are bitter and herbal with hay and lime flavors. Medium bodied (more so than I expected), lively carbonation, and very refreshing.

Hmm. This beer is marred by its unevenness. Light caramel brown in color, chalky aromas of sweet yeast and sour plums or apricots. Mineral palate with aggressive carbonation, which sadly destroys the delicate floral and pit fruit flavors on the flavor profile.

Orange amber colour with a thick rocky head. Aromas of yeast, black pepper, wood, basement. Excellent flavour, mild funkiness, malty, spicy yeast. Quite refreshing

Bottle: Courtesy of Styles. The aroma is very floral with moderate lemon tartness and light yeastiness. It pours a bright transparent golden-orange with a large white head with decent retention and lacing. The flavor is very fruity and yeasty up front with hints of lemon in the background. The finish has some quick acidity with moderate flowery bitterness.

Small coarse white head. Light copper body with carbonation. Complex sweetish aroma of tropical fruit, champagne, and cake. Bitter champagne flavour. Initially there is extreme carbonation in the mouth, which makes it hard to analyze it in any detail, but gradually this settles down. Metal, grain, marzipan, and fruit. Quite a bit of alcohol heat. A bit thin-bodied and harsh for me. (0.375l bottle. Quite old, with yeast particles in the bottle; should probably re-rate at some point. Only rating beer from the top part of the bottle. Had a real struggle opening the wire cage; in the end the wire just broke. They could market this as a negative-calorie beer.)

Bottle... Hazy amber ale with a huge, frothy, white head. Terrific retention. The nose is breadsy and spicy with notes of citrus fruit, grain, unknown herbs, white pepper and orange peel. The well-balanced flavor is both herbal, and tangy. Medium-bodied and creamy with soft carbonation. Finishes mildly acidic, lightly bitter and, in the end, dry.
