Commercial Description:
La Moneuse is named for A. J. Moneuse (b. 1768), a famous local bandit and gang leader, and ancestor of the brewers' family. It is a classic "saison" beer by virtue of its strength and its earthy, aged quality. It has a hardy, semi-dry malt character, a fresh but not overpowering hoppiness, abundant yeasty, fruity flavors and a fairly strong, but pleasant and enticing mustiness.

The pour reveals a hazy yellow color with floaties and a thin white head. Amazing aroma of barnyard, fruits, yeast and hay. Superb complex flavor of hops, yeast, barnyard, fruits, spices and hay, it is well dry and thirst quenching. The mouthfeel is very comfy and powdery. This is what a saison has to be, a well attenuated example of belgian funky magic.

750ml bottle, 2005 bottling. Gentla aroma of toasty, honeyish and lightly sugary malt sweetness, orange frosting and a faint tea-like herbal spiciness. Medium copper color, mostly clear, with a lasting, frothy, ivory head. Flavor profile is primarily tart and fruity but in a mellow, aged fashion, beginning with a blend citrus and yeast, seeing a slight amount of sweetness enter, then becoming lightly bitter, peppery, spicy and drily musty by the finish, which features a hint of warmth very late. Palate is creamy and highly effervescent, body is medium-full. Pretty interesting stuff.

Poured super cloudy orange with a HUGE fluffy dirty white head that lasts forever. Aroma is apricot and floral notes while the head is present. Flavor is yeast, slightly sour, some fruit peels, a hint of apricot, and then really dry flowers. Body seems a bit thin to me. Finish is far to dry for my liking.

Deep gold and orange in color, very nice head lasts well. Aroma of yeast, apricot, and some breadiness, hint of sour as well. Initial bread flavor gives way to a slightly sour tinged fruitiness, mostly tangerine, and then goes into a drying, herbal finish. A tasty, if not spectacular, saison. Nothing at all wrong with this beer!

Lightly hazed golden ale with a thin white head. Coriander and sage aroma, with light acidic points. In mouth, coriander and fresh herbs, good malt, pleasant and smooth. Medium bodied. Mondial 2006.

In short: A complex and classy barnyard Saison. The real thing
How: Bottle 750ml, consumed fresh a few weeks after receiving it through private importation
The look: Cloudy golden body topped by a large white head
In long: Nose is funky barnyard. Taste is wild then even wilder. This is a Saison d’Epautre on steroids. Garden flowers, light honey, oranges, meringue, splendid dryness in the finish. Rich body and very yeasty with a taste dominated by a delicious mix of spices. Orange peels and some grassy notes too. The heavy carbonation works well with the spices and leaves a long tickling sensation. For a beer that was named after a famous belgian thief I sure didn’t feel ripped-off.
