Commercial Description:
La Moneuse is named for A. J. Moneuse (b. 1768), a famous local bandit and gang leader, and ancestor of the brewers' family. It is a classic "saison" beer by virtue of its strength and its earthy, aged quality. It has a hardy, semi-dry malt character, a fresh but not overpowering hoppiness, abundant yeasty, fruity flavors and a fairly strong, but pleasant and enticing mustiness.

Sampled at the RBPG; bottle courtesy of yinzer. Great sour chalky nose, lactic with Brett and a barnyard tang. Brilliant. Hazy amber liquid with fairly large sediment chunks in the bottom. This lacing head. Medium watery body with a heavy, effervescent carbonation - the bottle wasn’t quite a gusher but could have been. Sour and funky in taste with a good dose of yeastiness, orange peel, and spices - peppercorns or coriander? Brett dryness, particularly in the after, thin and a bit chalky. Nice after tang, dry. Really enjoyed this one.

2005 bottle. Golden color with some cloudiness and a bubbly white head. Aroma has a nice bit of earthy-citrus-tangy funk to it that is quite pleasant. Flavor is dominated by some citrusy tang - lots of tartness and some earthy funk. Some bretty qualities in there and a nice perky mouthfeel Not overpowering, just plain good. One of the better saisons available.

Bottle sampled at the Ratebeer meet-up 01.27.08 at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse. Beer courtesy of Yinzer.

Hazy gold with floaters, white head. Aroma is funky, musty, tangy: bleu cheese, fruit, slight spearmint. Flavor is herbal, slightly pickle-y, and meaty.

An awesome saison. Aroma was strong barnyard and wet blanket with a hint of white wine. Pour was a light gold with a puffy one finger white head with a nice amount of sediment. Flavor was mind blowing. Strong lemon/citrus funk with a nice sour/tart aftertaste. Very earthy and dirty with a a dry and fruity aftertaste. Great beer.

Bottle shared with Milos, Milos bottle- La Moneuse pours medium cloudy orange, topped by a rocky, long lasting white foam, peppered with yeast sediment. There are tonnes of floaties in this beer. So much so in fact, that I didn’t want to drink it. Not because I’m scared of the floaties, rather it looks so good, that I don’t want to drink it. The aroma is dry sherry, flowers, lots of spice with good amounts of orange and candy sugar. Quite a fruity flavour profile here(clementine), with some wood, belgian candy sugar, fresh hops. Quite dry and spritzy. This would do well with all sorts of food. Great! Thanks Milos!

Bottle, with Fin, Loz & Traci, the Belgian Tasting, Part II. Light copper, nice pillow of dense white head. Old fashioned candy store aroma--dusky cases, air permiated with sugar, subduded lemon and mint, Play-dough®. Dark sugar and lemon flavor, and though it finishes fairly dry, the overall effect is a bit clunky. Tasted next to Saison d’Epeautre it lacked that beer’s refined, refreshing qualities. Still a really nice and unique beer. Thanks Fin for sharing!

Bottle picked up at the Hop Duvel, Gent, early December 07. Shared this in Belgian Beer Tasting evening with Loz, Casey and Traci’ 04-01-08 Poured light amber with slight haze, white head and medium carbonation. This had a spicier nose that the Saison d’ Epeautre from the same brewery and tried before; the aroma had elements of Indian spices cardoman and coriander along with lemon and lime but this also had a dry and dusty nose as well. Tasted sweetish at first and the sharp tarty fruits were quickly blunted by the warming alcohol, again not at all evident in the Saison d’ Epeautre. Lemons, wheat and spices continue to mill around in the mouth and whilst a very good beer indeed not a patch on it’s weaker stablemate.

Bottle, at ZBF 2006. Hazy amber, thin off white head and gentle condition. Grain and a gentle yeastiness in the nose, quite dry and unexciting in the mouth with a fainty grainy sweetness, short sweet malty finish.
