Lafayette Black Angus Oatmeal Stout

When held up to natural light, one can see that this has a very dark brown body. Its tan head lingers none too long. There’s a bunch of oats in the aroma, perhaps to be expected since the grain bill contains 10% oatmeal. This is complemented by lightly roasted malt and some bittersweet chocolate. Nice and smooth to drink, it tastes of roasted malts with a touch of barley, oats, and milk chocolate. A nutty/earthy bitterness enters midway though and lasts into the finish. Pretty decent.

Tasting Notes
Aroma: Reminds me of those no-bake cookies chocolate and oats.
Appearance: Black.
Flavor: Creamy milk chocolate and some fruitiness. Not really that sweet, but not overly bitter either. About the sweetness level of a plain bowl of oatmeal.
Palate: Smooth and mellow.
Overall: Easy to drink. A decent Oatmeal Stout and better than most...

9/25/2007: Black Angus Oatmeal Stout is near black in color, opaque, and has no head. The aroma is a wonderful blend of smoky charred malt and chocolate. The flaovr is creamy and smooth and contains caramelized malt, some fruit in the mid-palate, chocholate, and some char. There is also a hint of meaty smoke. The body is medium and a touch thin on the palate. Overall this is a pretty solid stout.

Growler @ DLD: Black pour tiny head. Aroma, roasted malts, caramel, chocolate, some oats. Flavor was similar, pretty decent.

Sampled from a growler at DarkLord Day, thanks anonymous person. Pours a murky brown with a small head. Chocolate nose, not picking out much else. Light chocolate flavors with a smooth palate. Not very sweet for a sweet stout, and actually finishes a little dry ... but a decent stout none the less.

Had this on draft on a recent road trip. Served in a pub pint glass. Appears a very dark brown with a good one inch head on top. Looks good. Smell is roasted oats and malts. Taste is roasted oats with some molasses. Mouthfeel is really thick/creamy and smooth. Little to no carbonation to speak of. This is a good offering and a very good representation of the style. It goes down very easy and with no signs of the alcohol content. Which makes this a very sessionable beer.

Sampler-sized draft at LBC Black as road tar... no, that sounds unpleasant... well, black. A thin head owed partly to LBC’s lower carbonation levels across the line. A silky, creamy texture that does not mask the stout’s bitterness and a bit of driness. In other words, there are characteristics of nearly every kind of stout at work here.

Draught during my Great Lakes area brew tour. Black pour with some ruby, small white head. The nose is of oats and chocolate. The oats are definitely in the flavor, but not as strong as other stouts of this style. The chocolate character is well rounded and appropriately sweet. A bit of bitterness is noticeable in the form of elusive, piny hops. The finish is dusty but mainly sweet like milk chocolate. The mouthfeel was reasonably silky with a fairly low level of carbonation. Had this for breakfast on a Thursday. What a great way to start the day!
