Poured a darker reddish/brown color with an above averaged sized off white head. Smells like a nice aged barley wine - vanilla, earthy, light smoke, and caramel. Tastes of the same with dark fruits, brown sugar and very light alcohol (no where near the 11+ %). egajdzis (3636), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma of caramel malt, smoke, faint citrus, vanilla beans, and light alcohol. Taste of sweet caramel malts, dried fruits, nuts, vanilla, and light alcohol as well in the finish. Creamy mouthfeel. richlikebeer (832), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Sep 9, 2005 a claret red color with a thick creamy off white head, smells of grassy hops and lots of sweet caramels and some toast. flavors are very nicely blended, more or less mimicing what was in the nose. absolutely no hint of the abv, and just a completely smooth aftertaste. i would think this was an aged barley wine if i were driniking this in a blind tasting, becuase of the smoothness and excellent combination of the flavors. pantani (1902), Salinas, California, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 30, 2005 Bottle from Pailhead. Nice clear ruby-brown color. Fair tan head fades to a ring leaving slight lacing. Aroma is of caramel malt and slight hops. No alcohol noticed in the nose. Medium bodied. Nicely malted. Alcohol can be picked up in taste. Malt and hop bitterness balance fairly well in flavor. Decent. JCW (1262), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jul 23, 2005 Updated: Oct 10, 2005Some lace of head crowns the glass. Ruby color. Labunitas has a house flavor to me that is very earthy, like fremented leaves, and this one definely has that quality too!. Additionally it is very sweet with some undertones of hops showing up mainly as bitterness. Finish is sweet all the way. Because of the malt this beer will age in an interesting way, but I’ll be damn if I know what way. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 20, 2005 Courtesy of Pailhead. Pours dark mahogany, almost brown with off-white head. Aroma and flavor are all over the place. Nice malt hop balance. With caramel, roasted grain, chocolate and some strange fruit character. Lots of residuel sugar. Finishes very dry. Well done, no sip taste the same. Slighltly underrated IMO.
