Aroma is sweet and malty but not a lot of presence. First taste is harsh flavors and alcohol. Shortly, the harshness settles in and flavors of brown sugar and caramel come through. This beer has a sweet and powerful taste that is a accentuated by the high ABV. I like a sweet beer and this one is sweet to the nines. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 4, 2008 A nice and tame barley wine. Just the kind I like. Aroma of sticky malt and sweet caramel. Pour was a murky and cloudy dark brown with no head. Taste was sweet caramel malt with a very wet and sticky mouthfeel and a moderate hop burn going down. Decent carbonation in this one. Tastes like a Sugar Daddy candy. Easy to drink. beerledgend (919), Waterloo, Wellington, New Zealand

Big hop flavpours with hint of citrus. Huge bitter flavours that lingers for ages. Thanks John. MI2CA (1266), Noblesville, Indiana, USA

Pours transparent copper with a small head and good lacing. Flavor matches aroma with some vanilla and caramel creeping in. Palate is sticky. Overall a tasty winter warmer. doubleo (1121), San Diego, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 30, 2007 22oz bomber. I have decided I love Lagunitas’ stuff and their labels are pretty amusing. Pours cloudy light brown color with a thin but frothy head. Offwhite, fades rather quickly. Sweet but not too sweet like some of those other brown ales. I get a whiff of alcohol as well. A good dose of dark hops and malty goodness.
Tastes sweet. Molasses and brown sugar, I guess. Has a bitter, sort of hoppy, mostly alcohol, finish. Thick but nice and smooth. The alcohol hides well until you are about to finish it and then waboom. I dig it. You’ll get wrecked before you know it though so, watch out. shakespeare33 (120), san diego, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Dec 30, 2007 12 oz bottle, pours a crystal bottom red with little head.. smells very unique, sweet yet musty with almost a nutmeg scent.. initial taste, is that of a bitter sweetness and slight numbness to the tongue.. the sweetness is almost too much and doesnt match the aroma as I was disappointed in the initial taste, finishes decent with a warm overtone of malty sugar, bit much. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 29, 2007 12oz stubby. Pours dark golden with a small white head that dissolves into a white ring around the edge of the glass. Aroma is strong and malty, sweet, vanilla, oaky, maple syrup. Taste is a bit of a let down after the nice aroma. It’s nice and smooth but a bit watery compared to what I was expecting. Alcohol is hidden well. Nice but could have been better. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 29, 2007 12 oz bottle. Clear copper in color with a thin sheet of off-white head. Sweet raw sugarcane, malt, and lgiht earthy hops on the aroma. Very little alcohol on the nose. A lot of maltiness on the taste with enough hops throughout the taste to provide a tingling citric character. The finish is sweet but not cloying. A good balanced BW.
