Pours out in a clear dark brown colour with a stable pale brown foam. Black coffee and crackers in the aroma with faint notes of crisp hops. Flavour of coffee beans, nuts and dark chocolate. Feels rather light bodied and thin despite the 8+ ABV. Crisp and dryish mouthfeel. Long finish of nuts, crackers, mint and black coffee. Extremely well-hidden alcohol. talon1117 (625), Bellvue, Colorado, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jan 31, 2008 Pours nearly black with some dark garnet highlights and the head is light tan, average, and pillowy settling to a small frothy bit with no lace. Nose is a bit strange and uninticing with a lactic chocolate note, maple, dark caramles, and hints at vanilla coffee. Flavor is somewhat offputting with lots of the same lactic chocolate note, almost a bit like sour milk; lighter notes of maple, light coffee notes, and faint toasted bread crust towards the finish. Palate is less than medium, somewhat watery, and soft to lively. Finishes short and still lactic with a mild coffee acidity. Not at all what I was expecting out of a style which I tend to like. Maybe I just picked up a bad bottle because this was just way below my expectations. From my experience, Lagunitas tends to put out their best efforts in the highly hopped IIPA’s and American Strong Ales and tends to lack in other styles. Theis (3760), Denmark

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 29, 2008 Draft. 20 oz. Very dark mahogany color with little head. Aromas of coffee, caramel, and chocolate. Medium to full bodied with little carbonation. Flavor is sweet chocolate, then quickly overtaken by a roasted coffee bitterness that lingers for a while and the alcohol is well hidden. Distinct coffee flavor of this beer is really sets it apart from other stouts for me. Cool beer. bhensonb (4334), Woodland, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 28, 2008 bottle. Smells like coffee supported by chocolate. Near opaque dark brown color with a tan head that was impressive but short lived. Medium bodied with sharpish, fizzy carbonation. The flavor is definitely coffee backed by rather toasted malt - burnt notes here. The finish is dry, and there’s bitter, but whether from toasted malt or hop is difficult. It’s a pretty tasty drink. johndavidj99 (123), Township, Maine, USA

Sweet perfume aroma with hints of prunes and chocolate. Not much of a cappuccino or coffee taste, but great hop character. Light to medium texture (on the light side) with the perfect bitterness. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Jan 27, 2008 750ml bottle. Pours a dark cherry-red color with a wispy off-white head. Aroma is sweet, with a strong caramel character along with hints of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt. Body is full and smooth, with an initial caramel and chocolate flavor giving way to a long, creamy finish of coffee, wood, and smoke. A wonderfully smooth and balanced stout. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 27, 2008 Dark brown with a thin white head has a strong aroma of maple and malt.
Cappuccino and chocolate meld together for a fantastically dense and dark brew with a long, bitter finish like that of a nice cup of coffee.
Due to the strength of this beer, serve it along side a flourless chocolate cake or perhaps a nice steak.
