It has a lot of sediment and yeast that makes the beer a little chewey. But the flavor is very strong. Has a strong malty taste a little chocolately. A very good beer overall. iowaherkeye (1860), Los Angeles, California, USA

Clear dark brown with a 1/22 finger beige head, low retention. Chocolate malts and light Whoppers candy in the aroma with some light doughy notes and roast. After popping the cap I could definitely pick up on the pepper, but in my glass it’s a little more difficult (but easier after this warmed). Flavor is much the same with a little more rich molasses notes and some pepper coming in toward the semi-dry roasty finish. Bitterness peaked at a 3-4. Full body with light carbonation. Pretty good. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Apr 26, 2009 Aroma is strong, hoppy and yeasty with an earthy undertone of molasses. It pours a rich, opaque sable with a fairly thick but not too persistent pale tan head. Flavor is mouth-filling, earthy, sweet but not cloying, with coffee and molasses tones and just a whisper of hoppy bitterness. Texture is silky-smooth and nicely tingly, leaving a coffee-ish, slightly sweet aftertaste. pantani (1902), Salinas, California, USA

The head was tan, foamy and cascading during the pour. The lacing was decent and also foamy. The aroma was caramel, some chocolate, molasses, and brown sugar sweetness. The flavor presented the same notes in addition to a hint of smoke and some underlying bitterness and alcohol. More of a sweet,"bordering on an Imperial" Brown Ale to me. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 22, 2009 Cola brown pour with tan head. Sweet malty aroma. Head went away quickly. Sweet taste- leaves a nice aftertaste. Warmth from the alcohol comes out at the end. Sickboy282 (1100), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 21, 2009 Pours a deep brown hue with a light slight off white head. Aromas of cocoa, caramel, roasted coffee. Mouth feel is medium to full bodied with quite a bit of carbonation for the style. Pepper is mild and compliments the bitterness of the brew. Decent, but not fantastic. Lagunitasfan (447), San Diego, California, USA

Dr. Pepper dark with lots of chunkies in the glass. Tan head to nothing. Deep sweet malty nose. Great. Molasses and soy sauce hidden. Taste is malt, molasses and coffee hints. Sweet to serious bitter. I would call this under-rated.
