Dark, muddy brown with small beige ring of foam. Aroma is mild milk chocolate and prune with some vodka notes. Light spiciness in the flavor--I had no idea this beer was supposed to be a stout with pepper and actually thought it was just a really lame attempt at a strong Belgian with light spiciness from the yeast. Guess not, now that I see it was intentional. It’s a bit of a mess still. Sweet but not cloying at first, but an unfortunate milkiness comes forward to compete with lingering milk chocolate notes. Light late burn from the pepper. Some emerging notes of rotting veggies. Eh, I don’t know what to make of it as it doesn’t seem to take any of the directions it’s heading, yet that is not to say it’s a complex beer. It’s not. I like the idea of chocolate and pepper, but this beer just turned out weird. TheBeerGod (3157), Newport News, Virginia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 7, 2009 Bottle. Opaque but more a dark brown than black. Small tan head. Nose is roasted malts, light spice, dark chocolate and light coffee. Taste is more roasted malts, light spicy note, chocolate, bitter coffee, and light hops. Rather chewy body with bubbly but creamy carbonation. Ends with more chewy malts, roasted notes, light spice, dark chocolate and coffee. Tasty beer! Juelze (902), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 7, 2009 Bomber. Dark brown with a nice thick brown head. Nose is spicy, perfumy, roasty, malty. Taste is bit soapy, sweet, viscous, chocolately. Alcohol is present but not overwhelming. Body is thick and viscous, chewy. Reminds me of Avery 14. One of Lagunitas’ better efforts. nathan30533 (145), Dahlonega, Georgia, USA
