Either way/ The beer seems to be a more amped up version of a true British IPA. The malt profile is very english. Maris otter malt is present and the liberal use of fuggles and goldings. A nice beer that was somewhat unexpected int eh American Strong category. Brodie (540), Blowing Rock, North Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 25, 2004 Buying a Lagunitas beer is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get. They have all kinds of propaganda written on the label, but absolutely no indication of style. I am anticipating a strong hoppy bitter ale based on the name of the beer. Here's what I get: Strong floral and fruity hop aroma with some underlying maltiness. Clear amber color, white head that leaves excellent lacing. Flavor is again dominated by hops - fresh flowers, citrus with some apricot. There is decent supporting malt to even out the flavor. Finished with a big kick of hop bitterness. Medium-bodied, no alcohol warming evident. A very nice hoppy strong ale with a refreshingly different hop (my guess is Simcoe) character. y0cola (361), fremont, California, USA

Light amber color, slightly cloudy, moderate white head. Big citrus nose, like lemons, with some pine in there too! Very Balanced IMO. Crystal malt. Slight bitter finish, good beer. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 4, 2003 Updated: Jan 15, 2004-rerate: more bitter with 6 weeks in the cellar? I dunno, but I like this - I want to know the hop bill!!. Original - Oh no, not just grapefruit - we have some other very Germanic hop influence here - iron and earthy bitterness abound! Joy! Some Hallertauish spice? - oh yeah! A tiny wee bit of sweet malt? Not much - This is NOTHING like some of the other American Strong Ales we've all been drinking and I applaud the effort - ya gotta be into the herbalness, however, or you need not apply. Take Spezial Rauch's Lager and amp up the aroma a million fold and add in 1 part dreadnaught to 3 of this and you begin to approximate the aroma. Lighter in color then expected (gold). Yum. Flat out bitter! Eat a pencil. Murphy (1759), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 23, 2003 This beer had they typical Lagunitas taste to it which I cannot describe. Some prevalent hop character that lingers in the mouth. A little overcarbonated, but not bad. Could use a little more body. A decent beer. grant (792), Long Beach, CA/Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 19, 2003 I love Lagunitas! They make all quality stuff, charge average to low prices for sixers, and don't rip you off just because you decide you only want a bomber ($2.59). This one is somewhere in between Censored and Maximus, but the character is more like Censored. A good-looking medium amber, medium head. Aroma is pancakes and syrup, even a little butter. Some orange marmalade spread on those pancakes. Great, herby bitterness. Can't believe it's only 57 IBUs. A great pleasure to drink. Reid (1090), Salem, Oregon, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 14, 2003 Ok looking for a beer to reveiw in Salem , I haven't aleady had..in desperation I entered the cheap cigarette outlet type store ( cash only)..they sometimes have a surprise and right there in front of my eyes in the walk in cooler..was this.
The beer comes in the 22 oz bomber with the typical rambling Lagunitas label..plus the dog.
In appearance this beer is almost like a stong ice tea in appearance..with a smallish white head and attractive carbonation strings,
A very very spicy hop aroma greets my nose tough I do detect some malt in the background.
A very hoppy type ale in taste..especially for LagunitasI am impressed the hops bitterness is very fresh and hangs around for quite some time..there is below all this hops a pretty strong malt backbone..the 7.3 alcohol is well hidden
Pretty nice ans smooth on the palate.
For a 7.8% beer this is so very very drinkable.
