Commercial Description:
It is just a plain old 'punch-in-the-mouth' of a beer, meaning that it is SG of 1.075 or so and a robust bitterness... The beer is, in a word; Dark, Alcoholic, Bitter, and Unapologetic. Brilliant. Hunter has long been one of my personal heros and inspirations. From the label: Hunter S. Thompson occupies an honored seat in the pantheon of our heros. We have appropriated much from him, both stylistically and literally. From a direct and unattributed quote on the BrownShugga about "...The short-changed children of the eighties..." to the tone from the Imperial Red Ale story. We didn't ask permission to use this image or make this beer but Hunter did not ask permission to spray-paint "F---the Pope" on the America's Cup boat in Newport Harbor way back when either. Hunter looms as large as Kerouac, Hemmingway, Baudelaire, and Dylan in our thinking. His subersive Thursday columns in the also gone Examiner propelled our own processes and in that were changed. Gonzo is dead. Long live Gonzo!

Bottle shared by moejuck: Clear amber color with an off white head. Aroma, caramel malts, citrus and earthy hops. Flavor, caramel, earthy hops, a good malt base with some really nice bitterness to it. Real good stuff.

Very hot alcoholic nose with notes of molasses and hop resins. Mildly nutty and biscuity with caramel notes. Far too hot for me.

Dark and richly malted brew, but still balanced nicely. Caramel and berry sweetness mesh well with the sharp hops. Smooth and enjoyable for such a high ABV, never showed any alcohol burn.

Poured a clear deep amber with a reddish tint and medium off-white head. Sweet fruity malt aroma with a good amoutn of piney hop. Fair amount of fruity malt in the flavor. The mouth fills with flavor. Nice bitterness from the middle on. Piney hop. Long finish with a moderate bitterness. Medium bodied.

Dark amber color with a larger foamy cream colored head. Berries and caramel mix in the pine forest. Sweet caramel and raisins seem to be about the most I get out of the flavor in this one. A mild hops presence and some fruit come in the finish and linger. Seems like just another American strong to me.

Bottle, Vail fest, Jan 2006. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly malty (roasted grain), lightly hoppy (resin), with a note of sherry. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Yawn.

Another gem provided by CaptainCougar! Poured a clear, reddish caramel with a tall off-white head. Rich, deep malty aroma with a whole buncha darker spices and dark fruits... some biscuity malt, too. Toffee and dark berries at the forefront of the flavor with caramel and alcohol highlights... later on came some elderberry, brown sugar, and darker spices. Creamy malts across the middle of the palate with alcohol-fueled hop bitters and spices surrounding. Excellent.

Hazy, orangish-caramel brown in color with a dusty enclave forming jaggedly in the center for the head, along with a lacey white rung. Aromatic bedevilment. Blueberries side with chewy caramel cubes. Plum pudding meets strawberry Honey Bunches of Oats. Quite a sweet smelling cacophony. Flavor delivers. Hop bitterness lightens the load slightly, but that syrupy purple fruit banter is still ever-present. Mild pepper titters on top of a butterscotch betterment. Blueberries and boysenberry fruity esters are never dormant. Bitter hop take on the recession, with a syrupy beggar feeling when it’s all gone. Good stuff, courtesy of CaptainCougar.
