| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Mar 27, 2006 Hazy, orangish-caramel brown in color with a dusty enclave forming jaggedly in the center for the head, along with a lacey white rung. Aromatic bedevilment. Blueberries side with chewy caramel cubes. Plum pudding meets strawberry Honey Bunches of Oats. Quite a sweet smelling cacophony. Flavor delivers. Hop bitterness lightens the load slightly, but that syrupy purple fruit banter is still ever-present. Mild pepper titters on top of a butterscotch betterment. Blueberries and boysenberry fruity esters are never dormant. Bitter hop take on the recession, with a syrupy beggar feeling when it’s all gone. Good stuff, courtesy of CaptainCougar. Pours a nice deep mahogony color with a short offwhite head that laces down the sides of the Trappist Glass. Aromas of sweet caramel, some raisins, bread, and nice citrus and pine hops. The taste begins very sweet.. Notes of caramel, cherry, dough, and even a touch of roasted malt, but it gives way to those pine and grapefruit hops that finish of the brew wtih a nice bitter balance to that early sweetness. Palate is full bodied with a very pleasant soft airy mouthfeel. A great beer to pay tribute to this icon. Very nice.. Glad to have a chance to try this! Oh and the label is one of the best ever... | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Mar 27, 2006 Another gem provided by CaptainCougar! Poured a clear, reddish caramel with a tall off-white head. Rich, deep malty aroma with a whole buncha darker spices and dark fruits... some biscuity malt, too. Toffee and dark berries at the forefront of the flavor with caramel and alcohol highlights... later on came some elderberry, brown sugar, and darker spices. Creamy malts across the middle of the palate with alcohol-fueled hop bitters and spices surrounding. Excellent. beerguy101 (3972), Newark, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 19, 2005 22oz bottle. Dark red color. Medium sized white foamy head, long lasting strong lacing. Aroma is fruity and sweet, touch of chocolate and some hop aroma that seems to dissipate rather quickly. For some reason I feel like I should be drinking and reviewing this beer wearing a smoking jacket and sunglass with a warm 45 by my side. I would have some vials of ether nearby but this swarm of bat came by and stole them all. A medium to full bodied American Strong Ale. Malts are fruity and sweet with some chocolate and cherry flavors. A medium bitter hoppiness that’s kind of hard to define, sort of grapefruity and earthy but… A big bold beer, but the flavors are not quite an assault to the taste buds. Very smooth taste. Nice beer. As usual an interesting and hard to analyze beer from Lagunitas. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. I’m feeling a little lightheaded, maybe someone else should finish this rating. egajdzis (3644), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma of caramel malt, nuts, butter and some light floral hops. Taste of caramel malt, some smoke, citrus fruits, orange peel, raisins, and some light alcohol as well. Toasty dark caramel cookie dough aroma has some mild complex butterscotch and piney hoppy presence. Body starts with a toasty sweet caramel maltiness loaded with lots of fresh resiny and grapefruity hops. Very well-balanced and enjoyable and full of bold flavor that hides the abv very well. elnadeau (786), Laguna Niguel, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 4, 2005 Pourd dark brown-amber with decent head, sweet roasty caramel, fruit and alcohol aroma. Fairly bold and complex, this beer is hard to pin down. Claims to be an imperial red? Full bodied, some hints of cherry, cocoa, spices, bread; somewhat astringent bitterness with alcohol not all that well hidden. But yes I liked it quite a bit.
