Commercial Description:
Having downed his forth Imperial Stout of theay, the wild eyed charlatan from Voldvostogniaky belched and hollered for the Czarina to enter his chamber and bend herself to his will. The economy was a wreck and revolt was just around the corner. Nicky the Czar dude was off playing soldier like any pale nobleman with a hemorrphagic skin condition would. Such were the final days of the old empire. Reactionary, decadent, sputnik, stroganoff, wierd, and drunk. But even as the proletariat countryside labored under inhuman conditions and a threat of being sent to futile war in the east, they wisely took the time to slam back an Imperial Stout or two. After all, life can be a real "suka", as they say in the old country. Big, black, bourgeois, bolshoy, belligerent, buxom, and scary - this is our version of the chaotic end of an era in a bottle.

A clear dark brown stout with a light moka head. A sweet vinous chocolate aroma with light notes of licorice. In mouth, a rather light imperial stout, with powdery chocolate, plums and burned toasts, and a sustained burned bitterness. Medium bodied. Bought at Sherbrooke Liquors, Edmonton, Jan. 2007.

Dark red with little carbonation. Some grassy hops in the nose. Pretty roasted but more like a strong porter than imp. stout. Could use more body also.

bomber poured a red chestnut in color with minimal carbination and little head on the beer. smell is malty, chocolate, some underlying hops, prunes, and light alcohol. the beer itself on first looks is a little thin for an imperial. taste is medium on the mouth feel, slight bitterness on the finish, and is thin for an imperial. the beer itself has this hops and malt thing going on that is interesting but the beer overall is just mediocre for me.

Kinda see through, and not in a good way.Drinks more like a Porter. Truly delicious beer - but this ain’t no big burly Imperial Stout. Oi, get yer clear out of stout!

Dark mahogany color with a black center. Small, frothy tan head settles to a thin film with a prominent rim. Minimal, spider web lacing. The aroma shows chocolate, anise, caramel, nougat, stewed raisons, and vanilla. Smells very nice. The flavor is essentially the same, with big chocolate and caramel up front accompanied by highlights of anise, vanilla, and dark fruits. The body is just a bit on the light side for an Imperial Stout. Smooth, lightly chewy texture with a moderate chocolate finish. Very nice brew, though I’d say its just a little understated for an Imperial.

Dark ruby, explosive foaming tan head, roasted malt aroma, light roasted malt flavor, velvet smooth body, deceptive as an imperial stout, subtle from beginning to end

Bottle. Pours ruby brown with a tall creamy tan head. Very light for the style. Aroma is mild, some chocolate, and flat malts. So far I’m wondering how this is an imperial stout. Then I taste it...I’m now thoroughly confused. There is an abundance of hops, over a medium malty background, and the mouthfeel is only medium/full. In a blind tasting there is no way that I would recognize this as an Imperial Stout. But, wow, I really dig the flavor profile of this beer. The citrus hops somehow fit in very well with the chocolate malts. Kudos to Lagunitas for not being afraid to break style. The only other Imperial Stout I’ve ever had that is so noticeably hoppy is Sweetwater’s Happy Ending.

Sampled at Lagunitas. Dark brown semi-clear with a slightly fizzy head. Malty some what roasty aroma. Watery palate. Good chocolate taste with hints of coffee and caramel in the finish with an alcoholic warmth.
