Pours jet black with a thin head mocha colored head. Mmmm, aroma of sweet chocolates, caramels, and roasted barley. I just love this beer, my favorite from Lagunitas and very under-rated here. The taste is what really hooked me here. It is so crisp, refreshing, yet bold, smokey, rich, and dark at the same time. A great summertime stout. mkgrenwel (420), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 23, 2006 First thing I notice is that it’s a little spicy (cinnamon). Raisin, chocolate, cane sugar. Grainy and malty. A little bit of peanut butter like a porter. Not sticky-sweet, but a better than modest sweetness. Hardly any bitterness other than for balancing. Hop flavor is not there, other than a slight lingering grassiness in the finish. Actually, now that I’ve found it, it’s getting stronger. Full creamy, yet grainy palate. This is pretty damn good. Reminds me a lot of Bells Expedition.

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 29, 2002 This is a dark, thick and aromatic stout that smells of treacle, blueberries, chicory coffee and anise. It is fairly strong at 8.2% alcohol by volume, and bites back with a bit of bitterness -- I.B.U. = 72.45. cAPSLOCK (154), Dallas, Texas, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Oct 16, 2004 Very dark, nearly black with a medium tan head that leaves generous lacing. Strong malt aroma with coffe and chocolate. Sweet coffee like flavor with lots of sweet malt balanced by quite a bit of hops. Not as thick or grainy as some in this type, but still a nice feel, though a little thin. Packs a whollop. Very nice. ericnixon (719), Northampton, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Feb 21, 2005 Wonderful aroma that’s sorta choco but also has a slight note of alcohol. Nice smooth mellow flavor that’s not overbearing like some other imperial stouts. It’s a little on the watery side, but very good nonetheless. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 14, 2004 Pours a dark brown, almost black, with a small tan head. Aroma was chocolate, coffee, port wine, toasted grain. Nice body with a smooth feeling in the mouth. Good flavor. Robust coffee/chocolate/port. Excellent. zig (2), Portland, Oregon, USA does not count | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 29, 2005 definitely not as strong as a typical Imperial Stout but one of the finest tastes around. Smooth and easy to drink. You can’t taste the strength of the alcohol so watch out. One of my favorite beers. cathcacr (592), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 13, 2009 As the numbers go, I just love this style and this example doesn’t disappoint. Aroma affords a hint of chocolatey/fruity sweetness. Not much head or retention. Flavor is like many an IS that I’ve had; this one has some woody character that I’ve found in other ISes. Finishes full and crisp, a bit woody.
