The flavor is chocolate and caramel, roasty and rich. The alcohol is just the slightest bit noticeable. beerguy101 (3972), Newark, California, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Nov 1, 2002 I wasn’t persuaded by this beer. Pours attractively with a fluffy head, though quickly gone for me. I was pleased with the roasted maltiness that came out as it warmed, but the particular hopping here left me with a harsh, almost artificial bitterness that overwhelmed the interesting veins of flavor that I could find. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 13, 2002 The pour a clear deep ruby red, with hints of brown. Head is exorbitant, beige, frothy, long lasting, the lace is in tnick sheets that cling to the glass. Nose is malt, caramel, sweet, fresh ground barley. Front is sweet, the top light, the finish is lightly carbonated, sparingly dry, potently hopped. There is also a alcohol bitterness in the aftertaste. Another winner in my opinion from a magnificent brewery. Ranks #349 on my current 1000 beer master list. Crit (2416), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 8, 2002 Tap. The aroma has lots of malts and a touch of red fruit. Nice hop fuel to the malt punch. TAR (2095), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 14, 2003 Rusty liquid paired with a thick foam that resembles frothed milk.
Delicous, yet unorthodox to the style spicy hop dominant aroma with soft underlying notes of cardboard, leather, pineapple, pine, jelly, crystal malt, and rye. Semi sappy and very soft on the palate. Huge hop flavors abound upon first sip. Quickly masked by cardboard, pineapple, and a sloppy, yet very tasty giant malt profile. This borderlines on being an IPA with its long brash bitterness. Only the slightest Bock traits, yet it accomplishes what it set out to do, which is to satisfy both the Bock appetite and hop craving. Slightly lacking in complexity, but the flavors are still highly satisfying. A huge beer that defies classification without a doubt, and I love it. BillKismet (1959), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 6, 2002 DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE LABEL!!! THIS IS AN IPA!. Rich amber bodied with a frothy, pockish head this beer looked tasty. Nominally a bock, the Lagunator Ale has a floral hop head typical of IPA’s possibly with a hint of malt if you strain for it. The taste reflects teh aroma with a pungently floral hop taste and a sour-bitterness on the finish that could have been better balanced. Over the course of drinking it, I gave this beer an hour or so to warm--hoping to elicity bock qualities. After straining myself in this manner, I finally detected some malts in the puddle that would be my final sip. A nice power-packed IPA--but NOT A BOCK.
