The nose presented is of roasted malt and there is a light, butter-toffee aroma. In flavor, this beer presents a lot of roasted malt flavor and a touch of sweetness. Mid-palate, there is a slight flavor of dry hazelnut. This beer finishes with a pleasantly complex bitterness that is long-lasting and lip-smacking. uhorpheus (215), houston, Texas, USA

Laced with an assortment of spices, very rich and hearty while going down light and cleansing. brian1233 (30), North Augusta, South Carolina, USA

Dark reddish brown, cloudy with a light beige head. Flavor is sweet and hoppy. I can detect some citrus and herbal flavors. Nice creamy feel in my mouth. A nice bock-like beer. foduck (304), Denton, Texas, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 27, 2002 I was skeptical about this at first, a bock from a brewery that tends to make a lot of hoppy beers. But once again Lagunitas comes through with a great beer. Yes, it did have a bit of hops in there which one does not expect in a bock, but by no means did it ruin the experience. The aroma is of cocoa and hops, flavor is a bit of hops first, then this very pleasant maltiness. Lots of chocolate in here. I really liked this. argo0 (6936), Washington DC, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 8, 2002 This is a really good beer. Aroma is sweet, caramel, rich and malty. The flavor is chocolate and caramel, roasty and rich. The alcohol is just the slightest bit noticeable. joet (1709), Fulton, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 17, 2002 Looks very appetizing in the glass -- good color, foam and aroma. Easy drinking for a winter warmer. More like an American Brown ale or me and that’s a good thing. This is rich and very well balanced letting allowing you to really check out the malt complexity -- nice raw cocoa and pleasant grainy carmel flavors and dry enough to make this a session ale despite the delicious helping of alcohol. Texture is really interesting, it’s thick without being creamy. I’d say maybe milky in texture, but it’d be skim milk. Very rich scent, winey and plums. Flavor was a bit of port and fruit. Make the flavor stronger and up the abv and it would have a barleywine quality to it. Interesting. Zach Diesel (907), Portland, Oregon, USA
