Kinz (1900), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Apr 25, 2008 Picked this up at Fresh Market to my pleasant surprise. Medium clear amber, decent head fades slowly. Aroma of pine and some citric hops. Also some earthiness and caramel. Flavor essentially matches, with a bit of alcohol showing itself on a slightly sticky finish. I liked this beer. Having said that, Lagunitas is starting to remind me of Unibroue in some ways. I normally like the beers, but a great deal of the releases seem to be plays on the same basic concept. For Unibroue, it is the house yeast flavor that is the backbone of a myriad of "Belgian Strong" ales. For Lagunitas, it is a variety of West Coast hoppy and slightly sticky beers that wander around IPA/IIPA/AS territory. I’m also starting to wonder if I’m not detecting a slight house yeast note. Would have to try blind to know for sure, but there does seem to be a common thread to many, many of the beers.
00cobraR (950), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Sep 3, 2008 Pours out a darker copper color with a nice off white head. aroma was malty, sweet and full of hops. flavor was sort of sweet with a nice balance of malt to the mix. finish was fairly hoppy and lasting. This was a rather good beer and something i would enjoy again. chicagobears (323), Elk Grove Village, Illinois, USA Aug 31, 2008 Poured a reddish copper, sticky lacing. The malts were very well pronounced. Toasted caramel, sweet, balanced with some citrus hops. Had 2 bombers of this. v8powered (14), , Nevada, USA Aug 30, 2008 Bright copper color and flavor. The head is white and leaves lacy reminants that stick to the sides of the glass, leaving rings after each sip. Strong hops present in this beer that leave a piney/citrus flavor on the tongue. Malty finish but the hops stick around long after you taste. Close to an IPA but with more toasted carmel malt flavor. Alcohol is not over powering but definitely present. KnN (271), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Aug 30, 2008 Pours a really nice ruby red with a thin off white head. Aroma is pine hops and malt.
Flavor is pretty nice. A little bitter but more malty than anything. A really nice well balanced beer. crazyvin (1078), New York, USA Aug 30, 2008 Poured a heftly looking copper hue with a nice tan head. Aroma had strong caramel malt notes and nice bittering hops. Flavor has a cloying note to it initially and that was balanced out by a hops/alcohol mix. A nice rich finish.
