It looks Frank Zappa has risen from the grave once again and combined forces with the good people at Lagunitas to create a memorable brew and not just because of the catchy name. beer looks a yummy dark clear copper with a large thick tan colored head. Flavor seems light and unexpectedly bitter. Aroma is slightly metallic and has and has a remarkably similar smell to root beer with mild alcohol notes. Lots of thick malts with hints of chocolate, prunes, brown sugar, some metallic flavor and a good hop presence making the flavor a little crisp. Overall it seems sweet but leaves a mild lingering bitterness in my mouth. The beer is nicely balanced to be full flavored yet crisp and easy drinking with enough complexities to keep it interesting. This is by far the most enjoyable brew I’ve ever had from Lagunitas.

Bottle. Maroon red translucent coloring. No head. Like melted candle wax. Tea, dates / dark fruit. Swear I catch an odd whiff of dijon mustard too. Warm and disarming on initial tasting. A little sharp, acidic to tongue and roof of mouth, following by a tea flavored finish.

Bottled. An amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and over ripe fruit. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and fruit, as well as well as a bit of oxidation, leading to a dry metallic finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

22oz Bottle: This bottle has been lurking in the back of my fridge forever, I can’t even remember when I put it in there...here goes. Cloudy dark amber w/ a small khaki head. Nutty, caramel aroma. Flavor is malty w/ hints of caramel & toffee. Some bitter hops kick in towards the finish. Leaves a metallic taste behind. Gets better as it warms a bit...more toasty & a bit of alcohol peeks through the aroma. Seemed to smooth out a little too.

[1922-20081222] 1pt6floz bottle. Grainy malty mild fruit aroma. Clear, dark red body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Heavy grainy malt flavour with wood hints and a fruit base grass. Medium-full body is boozy. Not bad.
Overheard: "Heh heh, you said ’unit’." -- as in Moon Unit
Overheard: "Toula, you’re a lot cuter when you’re not making a beeline for my gonads." "She’s just sayin’ hi."

Brown color with a bready malt aroma that is basically a sugary brown ale from my point of view. Taste is the same, but very much lacking. Kind of a waste of a good opportunity to do something really good here.
