Clear cedar pour supporting a small light khaki head which settles to a thin disc that lasts about half-way to the bottom of the glass. Fruity aroma with burnt caramel hopping about. Surprising yeasty note gives way to flavors of toffee, cocoa, dried apples and caramel - perhaps a bit too much caramel. Hop presence ie is there but too restrained. Texture is a bit oily and the beer finishes on the sweet side. Another style bending offering from these guys but this time the flavors and balance are a bit bent out of proportion as well. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 27, 2008 pours a shine amber with brown highlights and nice than persistent head leaving really nice lacing.
Nose of nice caramel a touch of alcohol and some dates in the aroma.
Tastes really similar to what is smells like - caramel with spicy and pithy hope flavor.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodies with a creamy notes
Finish is dry, creamy and lingers for a bit with some spicy hop flavor and caramel notes.
Overall: For a limited release comes across as a huge amber with accent on dark crystal malts saving grace being the hops are present to eliminate the cloying effect. Methinks the caramel notes make it hard to enjoy a full pint of this...Skips along the line of being a little brother to a barleywine - feels stronger in alcohol than the 7.2% - some aging may make it like an old ale or little brother of the Gnarlywine.
