| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 7, 2009 Puffy off-white head ahbove a dark, glassy copper color. Massive upswim of tiny carbonation bubbles. Chunky, milky lace.
Nicely balanced bitter-on-bitter aroma. First hops, then toasted malt. Hops are of the California, pine variety. In the malt, burnt dark chocolate and coffee notes. Smells dark; malt wins the battle.
Burnt chocolate malt sets the table for all the other flavors. Some smokyness. Hops come out in the aftertaste. Could use a tad more sweetness for balance, but quite pleasant.
Feels milkyh and leaves a nice malty layer. A good -- if not spectactular -- amber ale. Just a nibble of bitterness in the malt. Smooth and very mellow. larryLSB (163), La Selva Beach, California, USA

The aroma is lightly caramelly with some nutty caramel. The flavor is also malty, lightly roasty with some coffee, and some nuttiness as well. There is a light bitterness that grabs at the back of the throat. This beer is smooth and quite enjoyable.

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 18, 2009 Bottle at the brewery during RBSG09. Red-brown with a lasting head. Lots of brown sugar and caramel in the aroma. Sweet caramel and light roasted malt flavors with a bitter, hoppy finish. Medium bodied and sticky. Pretty typical of these guys in the ASA range; a bit too sweet, but still with plenty of hops. Not one of their better interpretations of this formula, but still pleasant enough.
