Surprising nose at first--all I got was a deep astringent smell, but I could tell something was behind it... piney resin, malt, and faint grapefruit skin. Seemed overly resiny and perhaps sweet to me, not allowing the citrus of the hops to come out. Still, I’m intrigued as this was a pretty distinctive brew to me. Subsequent tastings may change my mind. My bottle was 8.4%, not 7.5%, by the way, and the alcohol was definitely present on the palate.
Note: second tasting revealing more citrus and better balance, though overall impression was a little astringent. I bumped it up a point. GJF (513), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 18, 2008 Poured at Firkin Fest at Triple Rock, a hazy gold with ecru head, aromas of floral piney hops and a touch of malt sweetness. The flavor comes in with a punch of caramel sweetness which quickly turns into a drying floral hop bitterness carrying pine and citrusy gratefruit notes. Nice balance that is enhance by the small cask experience. Good beer. robforbes (1105), Bremerton, Washington, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 18, 2008 Bottle. Light to moderate malt aromas of cookie and caramel, heavy smells of pine and grapefruit for the hops, light broth for the yeast, and currant and date in the background. Head is small and white with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is murky orange tan. Flavor is lightly sweet and acidic to start and the long finish is lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, oily and the carbonation is lively. A very nicely balanced DIPA with no negative characteristics jmcguire1969 (149), Lafayette, Colorado, USA
