trevor211 (499), Seattle, Washington, USA Jan 4, 2009 Pours a burnt reddish orange with a small, dense head. The aroma is very, very sweet - so much malts you can hardly taste the hops. Almost sickly sweet - overripe fruit and raisins. Actually smells quite a bit like Samichlaus. The hops come through a bit more in the flavor, but still not much - this is an incredibly malty barleywine. A very good sipper, but it’s a bit over the top to have more than a small glass of. Pawola22 (676), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Jan 3, 2009 22oz bottle. Pours a clear, but very dark red, almost brown body. Creamy, finger-width, light brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a good amount of lacing. Looks very syrupy and thick. Aroma is heavily malted. Lots of berry fruits and caramel. Big raisin and plum smells with some brown sugar and a hint of citrusy hoppiness in the background. Flavor is very similar to the aroma. Deliciously and heavily malted. Very sweet. Raisons and plums, again. Lightly spiced and an underlying citrus hop balance. Slightly boozy, but not as warming as some other barley wines. Palate is full bodied, smooth, and oily. Sweet malty and light bitter linger. Overall, a nice sipper and an excellent beer. Its not the best barley wine out there, but it certainly is far from the worst. Good stuff. Beardface (977), Eugene, Oregon, USA Jan 2, 2009 Nice red-brown pour with a moderate biscuit colored head. Big fruit aroma, very raisin and plum heavy with some caramel and brown sugar as well. Excellent mixture of citrus and especially caramelly malt with some nice spicy essence as well. Excellent barleywine. travita (1851), Frisco, Texas, USA Dec 27, 2008 Look is dark amber to almost red with a decent beige colored head. Smell is fruit, alcohol, caramel, malts, and hops. Taste is sweet, fruits, alcohol, grapes, and warmth. darn1207 (528), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Dec 21, 2008 bomber from Marinos in Toledo. deep copper-amber pour with a medium tan head. aroma of dark fruits - prunes, raisins - and caramel. thin to medium texture. sharp citrus bite mixed with sweet malts. mild spices throughout. little bit of a burnt sugar thing happening. pretty good overall. Changed (161), Ithaca, New York, USA Dec 21, 2008 22oz. Pours semi-transparent burnt orange. Small, quickly dissipating head. Aroma is a lot of raisin and caramel, maybe some dark fruits. Upon warming, alcohol is present, as much as youd expect from a gnarly wine. At NinepointSeven percent, 22oz is a good kick in the head. Enjoyable barley wine for the price. Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Dec 17, 2008 Draft pours an amber body with a tan head. Grapefruit, sweet caramel, earthy hop character with over ripe fruit and a bitter finish. hubcrawler (36), , Virginia, USA Dec 12, 2008 Pours a cloudy, burnt orange color and has a rather small tan-colored head. It has intense aromas of raisin, chocolate, and black licorice. There was a very smooth, well-balanced flavor of some underlying bitterness and sweet malts.
There was also a slightly oily texture and smooth finish. The alcohol is not very noticeable for how strong this beer is.
