Twenty ’Aught-6 (2006 Vintage)

9/03/2008: Lagunitas Olde GnarleyWine Style Ale looks, smells, and tastes great. Its appearance in deep honey-brown color with a diminishing brown crown. Massive amounts of sweet caramelized malt and aged citrus/orange hops flow from the aroma. There is also a hint of vanilla inside the creamy rich caramel aroma along with a tinge of smooth alcohol. The maltiness is sweet and heavy in the front and is marked by rich, creamy caramel with the mild to moderate orange hop flavor and bitterness beggining in the middle and fading off toward the balanced finish. The finish also presents rich fruits including dried apricot, sweet dates, prune, and a hint of tobacco. Nearly no alcohol is apparent in the flavor. The mouthfeel is very full, thick and chewy, yet very smooth and easy to drink at the same time. This is another dangerous beer that is probably best enjoyed by sipping slowly...

1 Pint 6 Fluid Oz bottle (I.B.U. 69.39 / O.G. 1.096 / Alc. 9.7% by Vol. / $4.99+tax). Rating #466 for this beer...

22 oz- yummmmmmm. Purplish red hues. Nutty malt flavor, with a nice smooth high bitterness. So flavorful- so reasonably priced. Delicious.

22 oz bottle. Last one randomly left at Beverages 4 less. 2008 model. Loved this beer. Deep red/brown color with great light colored head. Sweet and thick. Fruity malty hoppy, almost chewable.

22oz bottle. Beautiful color, a dark ruby/copper color. It had a nice white head as well, clung to the glass all the way down. Smelled like toffee and raisens. Nice little hop bitterness to it initially and then it just layed softly on the tongue, delicious.

Bomber: A clear rudy red with hints of brown pour and a medium sized slightly tan head that lingers. Aroma is dark malt texture, nice hop backing, slight pine scent, hard candy that you get from grandma, and almost a woody texture to it as well. Taste is surprisingly sweet, although a lot of Lagunitas brews I’ve had are sweet, maybe I’ll buy another to cellar and find out how it ages. Well, back to the rating. A nice oak, caramel, malt flavor permeates through the back end of the taste. Up front its sugar, middle is more hard candy like. Overall, Definitely not one of the better Barley Wines that I’ve had. Drinkable but overly sweet and probably too young to be drinking right now.

Yes! This is a fabulous barleywine. Pours a deep ruby with a nice white head. The flavor is thick, caramel sweet with a slight burnt edge, and a wonderfully dry, very dry, finish with just the right touch of hops.

22oz bomber from State Line. pours cloudy red-browm with a thin white head and light lacing. nose of candy apple, brown sugar, fig, plum, prune, and alcohol. taste is bitter with heavy malt backing. brown sugar, caramel, dark fruit, and a slight woodiness. alcohol warmth comes through nicely without overwhelming. a firm bite from the hops towards the finish. oily, syrupy, its a lovely barleywine. inexpensive too!
