Nihon (239), Vernon, Connecticut, USA Aug 12, 2009 Deep cloudy amber color. Aroma of sweet bread, raisins, a hint of alcohol. Nice strong aroma. Very sweet and strong flavor, well balanced. Just the right amount of hops. Very malty, medium-heavy bodied. Velvety smooth mouthfeel. Very nice. drfabulous (1212), Columbia, Missouri, USA Aug 10, 2009 Very intense barley wine. Sweet, malty and fruity (plumb and some cherry). Alcohol is noticeable. wxman (582), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA Aug 6, 2009 Pours a deep clear garnett in color with a substantial yellow off-white head. Aroma is burnt candy and alcohol. WOW! Lots of different flavors here all at once. Cloyingly sweet comes to mind first and a brief alcohol burn after the swallow. Alright, let’s try again. There’s sweet roasted malt, caramel, maple, licorice and some hop bitterness. Fairly well balanced as busy as it is. This is a big one! MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Aug 3, 2009 A Mes rate: bottle at The Cadster’s Spotify tasting. Sim bought this back from the States last time she went. In all honesty I thought it would be good but I wasn’t expecting it to be great. How wrong I was, this is a belter. A dark hazy amber body with a really good beige head. Gorgeous malt and caramel plus some excellent fruity notes. Not overly hoppy like a lot of US barley wines but there is still a glorious bitter kick in the finish. Plenty of alcohol but it’s perfectly tolerable. Nothing outlandish just a really good enjoyable drink. SHIG (2012), Aviano, Italy Aug 3, 2009 Bottle: Poured a deep brown to amber with a thin beige head. Aroma is sweet with malts and caramel. Taste is full of malt and caramel, but has just enough hops and alcohol tingle to keep you interested from the top to bottom of your glass. savnac (392), Palmer, Alaska, USA Jul 30, 2009 22oz bottle. Deep clear amber/ruby with a light tan head that leaves some lacing. Aroma of caramel and toffee, with hints of pine and citrus. The flavor is a big sweet malt base with a bitterness that comes in towards the middle, there is a long finish, very faint alcohol presence. Medium to full body with an average carbonation and a syrupy mouth feel. Overall I’m really impressed with this beer, especially for the price ($4.00 even in Alaska). More of an English style with lots of sweetness but balanced and very drinkable. Barrios (852), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jul 26, 2009 Pours a beige head with legs and an amber-copper, clear body. Smells of resin hops and caramel. Flavor is caramelized malt and sticky hops. Finish is not too bitter. Strong. bigtaster (184), Grand Rapids, USA Jul 26, 2009 Casked at Graydon’s Crossings. Very nice cask ages, developed some nice malty character that was a bit unexpected, nice hoppy aroma. All around a great beer in cask.
