Clear, deep amber hued ale, a real looker of a beer. Nose is nicel fruity, hoppy with citrus, a touch of pine and medium sweet malts, doughy. Med/full body, slick, lightly oily, laid back citrus and pine flavors propped up with a gentle maltiness. Finish is mostly dry, spicey and lasting. A nicely balanced and highly quaffable brew. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 27, 2006 Updated: Dec 23, 200822 oz bottle. Poured somewhere between amber and copper with a tan head that was gone quickly leaving nice lacing. Nose was fruity and somewhat piny. Really rich on the tongue, and it hides the alcohol well. Flavor of caramel and chocolate. Somewhat sweet but not objectionably so. Almost like drinking a liqueur. Wonderfully executed Barley Wine.
Update: Recently drank a 2006 bottle (aged two years in my cellar) This seems to have gotten even better. Great stuff. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jul 21, 2005 Updated: Jan 3, 2008Courtesy of Pailhead and lunaticharness. Dark amber, slightly ruby color. Decent off-white head. Lots of caramel up front with some spicy hops. flavor very mellow/balanced between caramel and citrus hop finish. Very oily body and mouthfeel. While I am partial to barleywine’s, this is very well balanced. Doesn’t overdue anything just nice and smooth. Definately underrated IMO. Butters (1651), Virginia, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Aug 14, 2009 2008 On draft at Capital Ale House Downtown Richmond. Pours a beautiful burnt orange with fairly decent khaki head that has awesome lacing. Nose is sweet and herbal hops that come out more in the flavor. Raisins, brown sugar, piney hops, this is an amazing barlywine. No detectable alcohol on the nose or flavor, except for just the smallest enjoyable bit of warmaing sensation. Perfect moderately chewy palate, sticky sweet yet, not cloying at all. And such a reasonable price! Grade A brew! Marsiblursi (1649), Göteborg, Sweden
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 19, 2009 (Bottle) Pours light hazy deep red with a pale nougat coloured head. The aroma is of caramel and fudge up front with undertones of dark and tropical fruits like dried apricots, dried pineapples and prunes alongside a wet crisp bread-like oxidation. Sherry and burning alcohol also notable. Grapefruity and resinous hops. Bit cheesy. The flavour is near medium sweet and medium bitter with tones of caramel, fudge, dried/dark fruits, resinous/citric hops and wet crisp bread. Dry peppery alcohol blends well with spicy, bitter hops in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is juicy and sticky with a light carbonation. Medium to full bodied. GG (1645), NorCal, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 21, 2008 In many ways, I thought this was a poor man’s Old Guardian. It wasn’t nearly as tasty but it carried the same look, smell and flavor profile as OG. The beer pours out a reddish/brown color, clear with a nice off-white/light tan head. Aroma is caramel malts, piney hops, spicey and alcohol. Mouthfeel is firewater...lol. Flavor is sharp alcohol, caramel malts, and pine/grapefruit hops with a hot spicy finish. I’d bet this would be really tasty in another year or two, but not bad at all right now.
