Aroma of citrus, woods, oak, followed by sweet maltiness. Similiar flavor, has subtle pine notes, sweet malt, and fruitiness. Nice bitterness finish. No way I would have guessed 9.9% alcohol, it was so non-existant. Nice job Lag! xmarcnolanx (798), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 12, 2007 Pours copper with a small head. Aroma is of fruity hops and sweet malt. Taste is all hops with a lot of sweetness to it. It is a little strange, but has a nice bitter finish. Overall, not the best effort. drawde (115), San Francisco, California, USA

Dark copper and clear, nice medium-sized orange head. Mahogany colored and clear. Strong, full flavor, tipped more to hop than malt. Not my favorite style but pretty good I guess. chimpscampee (566), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Jul 11, 2007 Updated: Sep 7, 2009Wow the db f’d up and put the (really inaccurate) review below, last paragraph, someone else wrote but has my rating. amazing strong ale because it is so smooth. Hides the alcohol. The comparison would be be dogfish triple hopped IPA or founders double trouble but perhaps more barley wine flavor
Ale Noir! Hard nosed and menacing but in a delicous way. Cross between Black Bear Hotrod and GL Eliot Ness. You tasted the 9.9% just in the biting whiskey-like way sam spade would of wanted it. rocbyter (921), Waterbury, Connecticut, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 10, 2007 Slightly hazy copper amber with a soft golden head that generates respectable lace. Rich aromas of toffee, soft fruit, pine, and oak barrels. soft in the mouth, on the heavy side; sweet but not overbearing; toffee, slighlty earthy/woody, resinous hop bitterness that balances things perfectly. These guys do a good job with their strong ales. Fantastic! YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 9, 2007 Clear amber with a modest white head. Mix of grapefruit, pine, caramel, pekoe, and sawdust in the aroma. Robust and smooth in the mouth. Good flavor. Caramel sweetness tempered with some citrus bitterness.
