In some brewing guidlines, there is a fine line between the process of brewing a double IPA and actually ending up with a barleywine. I would classify this as a smooth, yet very interesting Double IPA/Barleywine crossover. Bought a case of this for $40, and let me tell you, if you appreciate barleywines, this is one of the best deals out there. Great aroma, hoppy, sweet, tangy, warming bite of alcohol. I truly enjoy sipping a beer like this with a nice mild dominican cigar. I think this should be sipped from a snifter, rather than glogged from a cold pint glass. Very, very nice beer, but if you are expecting a double IPA or American Strong Ale, you may be surprised that it seems different...but you should not be disappointed.

Another solid offering by Lagunitas. Copper colored brew with a pillowy white head that left rings of lacing. Aroma is a nice balance of lemongrass and buttermilk biscuit. Honey, pine, and citrus also find their way to the flavor which is refreshing and highly drinkable considering the ABV of this one. Medium mouthfeel with ample carbonation. Good.

Bottle. Amber body. Off-white, frothy, diminishing head. Sweet, malty aroma of cookie, graham cracker, toasted grain with notes of grapefruit and pine. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and moderately to heavily bitter. Medium to full body, watery texture turning sticky, almost chewy. Moderately carbonation. Alcohol warming. At first sip, the beer is dominated by sweet malts, but those are overrun by the hops. There is not a lot of depth, but the balance makes this a nice drinking beer.

22 oz bottle. Pours dark copper in flavour, with modest head. Big aroma and taste! Aroma is sweet with a sprucey, herbal hop finish. Flavour is also on the sweet side, with, again, a sprucey hint. Quite good!

Very rich and flavorful. Rich malty caramel flavor. Yes it is bitter, but it is more than balanced by the malt. Very chewy and coats the mouth to make the flavor last and last. Reminds me of liquid pecan pie.

This was truly a bitter beer. I’m not sure what the IBU’s were but you could just taste the bitterness. The appearance was amber-orange with a very good white head. The smell is hoppy, definitely DIPA territory, yum. My only complaint is that it is a little sweet. Other than that, this is one of the better Lagunitas beers that I have had. Appearance is a dark copper red with a large puffy head. Clear and glassy with a minor orange tint. The aroma is simply tremendous. Wet-smelling hop scent with floral and citric hops. Like a tremendous double-IPA with a ton of hop character. The hops are complex and not just overly bitter-smelling. Strong alcohol smell as well. The taste is an excellent strong ale alcohol flavor. Has a heavy, thick top layer of heavy hops. Very bitter and heavy. The hops are also woody. The taste is good although couldn’t possibly live up to the smell. The feel is thick, creamy and bubbly. Leaves a thick film. A really substantial brew. Really delicious, and though it’s heavy, it’s a fast, easy drinker.

Got a bottle of this from my brother in Chicago. A pretty funny story, and a pretty delicious beer!
