Aroma of milk sugar, light coffee, chocolate. Taste is much the same with some lactic milk taste. A bit sour for my taste but otherwise enjoyable. BeerBelcher (943), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 3, 2007 This beer is a good example of this style, and I definitely recommend it.
It poured an inky black, with minimal head. Aroma was a milk chocolate smell with some sourness (which was unexpected). Taste was a bit sour up front (kind of a pleasant surprise) with plenty of dry-roastiness ("burned pizza crust" flavor) at the finish. Mouthfeel was very smooth, and I thought this beer to be rather drinkable. Very nice, and definitely recommended. iowaherkeye (1860), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 11, 2007 12oz bottle, no date. Pours a dark brown--black in the glass with a 1/2 finger light brown head. Aroma of toffee and some acidic tang up front, some roasty and coffee flavors in the background. Some char does make itself known in the flavor, with still a fair amount of sweetness battling and beating out the coffee and roasted malts. Bitterness is low, the finish is dry, the body is a little thin for me, some fairly smooth moderate carbonation that would have benefitted better from a fuller body. Lake Louie has yet to make me mad with a crappy beer. Next up is the Mephistos. 19641948 (491), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 30, 2007 Pours a depp dark brown with an almond head that struggles to survive. A thing ring of bubbles with a swirly film is all that remains. Lace too struggles to cling, basically leaving a clean glass. Sweet aromas of chocolate and sugar. Breadiness evident with a hint of char. Flavors glide over the tongue with a milky sweetness and cocoa powder. Heck, it’s chocolate milk! Smooth creaminess. Aftertaste gives just a hint of lactic sour. Slides down the gullet with ease. Very drinkable. The bottle was dispatched hastily. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 4, 2007 The color was a chocalate black and the head was creamy and light brown. The aroma was alcohol molasses and sweet malts. The flavor was bitter and consisted of alcohol. The flavor was not as complex as I had hoped. The palate was full and the finish was warm. emacgee (1891), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 4, 2007 An extra in a trade with brewblackhole. Poured a velvety black with a medium, creamy, light tan head. The aroma is sweet, maybe hints of spice, and the definite lactose aroma. The flavor boasts a very roasted feel, and evident milk sugar, in the end its a little thin and lacks complexity. The plata is creamy and smooth and the finish is slightly warm with some roast. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 9, 2006 Bottle: Courtesy of Duan via trade. Aroma of chocolate and coffee with hints of smoke and vanilla. Pours a dark brown with no transparency and a small tan head with decent retention for the size. Light chocolate and coffee up front is quickly followed by a sort of fruity sourness and light roast in the finish. A tad thin for a stout. chimpscampee (566), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
