Commercial Description:
Brewed in the classic Scotch Ale style dating back to the 1700's, with a deep reddish brown color. Full of body, sweetness and flavor. Higher in alcohol content but possessing a smooth and lightly hopped finish. Best served at 45 degrees F in a room temperature pint glass. For the 'Big Beer' drinkers among us.

Bottle thanks to Brigadier sampled on 2/13/07: Pours a transparent dark copper mahogany with a spotty-lacing off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel and butterscotch with some toasted malty notes. Body starts with a sweet caramel maltiness with a lot of slick diacetyl butterscotch flavor toward a thin finish.

12 oz bottle. Poured a clear brown color with red highlights. Head disappeared pretty quickly and was light tan. Pleasant aroma of vanilla, caramel, and light cereal grain. Flavor is similar. Lots of vanilla and caramel. Delicately sweet on the tongue. No peated malt as far as I could tell. Not bad.

Straight from a 12-oz bottle. Pours a burnt copper and a small head that disappears fast if poured cold. Room temperature keeps the head around longer. Nose is clean and very little malt. Light roast malt flavor with a dry finish. I would definately serve this with a baked potato w/chives, bacon and sour cream.

Poured a clear golden brown color with a thin beige head. The aroma had a HUGE amount of diacetyl. Also notes of dough and something I couldn’t put my finger on. It reminded me of snack chips like Dorritos. The flavor was on the bland side. Light malt notes to start. The finish was actually larger than the start. Malty and bitter. Dry with a dull carbonation.

Originally had this in October 2004 from a growler from the source while visiting my father-in-law up in Wisconsin. Outstanding at the time, a 4.9 / 5 on that "other website". Let’s see how a bottle sent in trade handles.... Pours a brilliant ruddy crimson with a wispy head of eggshell. Droopy lace slides down the glass. Sweet aromas of caramel, toffee, and an unsettling scent of butterscotch. Huh??? I distinctly do not remember a buttery fragance from 2004. Slick flavors of caramel, plum, and cherry syrup. A smidge of peat, but not much. 2004 had boatloads of peat and smoke. Here?...not so much. Oily gliding mouthfeel. Drinkable, but knowing what I knew in Wisconsin in 2004....this doesn’t hold a candle. Disappointing.

12 oz bottle

I found this to be a drinkable beer, though a little disappointing. Perhaps my expectations were simply too high but it was lacking something to put it in the ’beyond average’ category. I could see buying some to ease friends into the world of craft beer but I think there are better alternatives out there for daily drinking.

Aroma / Appearance - A deep brown, almost black, body stands out against the off-white head. There was not much of it - just enough to create a filmy layer over the top. I think there was some carbonation though it was hard to tell with the darkness. Peat, cherry wood and raspberry iced tea stand out against a slightly smoky backbone. I was a little underwhelmed by the lack of complexity in the aroma.

Flavor / Palate - An oaky cherry taste washes across the tongue first. Next comes the taste of unsweetened iced tea (sun tea, not Lipton). A smoky aftertaste brings along with it a trace amount of bitterness. Overall I found the body to be a little on the thin side. It was still easy to drink. All in all I would rate this as a fun beer to try but not one to go out of your way to track down.

Light brown/dark amber body with a small off-white head. The aroma is golden raisins, caramel, brown sugar and floral hops. The flavor is caramel, floral, raisins and fairly dry. Medium/light body with soft carbonation and a dry, slightly bitter finish. Terrific stuff.

Sampled at Dutch 70’s "Tasting in the Woods; Part Deux". Dark clear red with an off-white head. Overall a very light aroma of grass and caramel. Flavor has notes of caramel, light noble hops, a hint of chocolate, brown sugar and light smoke. Medium bodied with subtle carbonation. Solid but is seems to be missing something, perhaps a little more malty heft.
