BeerBelcher (709), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Mar 15, 2008 Not bad; I’d have this again. Not really peaty or earthy, but there is some caramelness here that is balanced by some isoamyl acetate, spice, and sourness.
Nice appearance; blood red color with sparkling body. Nice quantity of head, which is itself sort of non-descript. I got a little isoamyl acetate in the nose, along with some peatiness which was largely overwhelmed by caramel. Nice caramel flavor tinged with some spice and a touch of sour. Not bad, but not really Scotch Ale-ish. Mouthfeel is pretty appropriate. A nice beer.
I bought this single serve 12oz from Three Cellars in Franklin, WI.
joergen (6240), Frederiksberg, Denmark Aug 20, 2008 Bottle.
Hazy orange brown coloured with a hughe off white ehad.
Sweet aroma of caramel and dried fruits with scidic notes.
Sweet flavour of caramel, dried fruits and alcohol with notes of rye bread.
Fizzy palate.
Warming alcoholic finish. yespr (6162), Copenhagen O, Denmark Aug 19, 2008 12 fl oz bottle. Pours unclear and deep brown with a slowly collapsing tan head. Lacto/milky and mild roasted malt to chocolate malty aroma. Mild lacto and chocolate malty flavour, goes nicely together. Light liqourice. Smooth acidic and malty finish with a liqourice lingering note. Nice one although I don’t think it was intended this way. csbosox (956), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Jun 28, 2008 Sweet and malty, lots of caramel, kettle caramelization, maybe a touch of peat smoke. Dark copper color. Thinnish mouthfeel. Taste is woodsy, with light malt and caramel. Somewhat sour. This has sat in my cellar since August, so maybe the age has not been kind to the beer, but there are some flaws here. zebracakes (972), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 23, 2008 Bottle thanks to CMUBEERMAN. Pours hazy orange brown, off white head. Aroma is malt caramel, vanilla, subtle coffee. Flavor is the same and very bitter. This would be better if there was less vanilla and more coffee in the flavor. The sweet and bitter taste makes it seem rather chemical-y. Ibrew2or3 (1648), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Apr 3, 2008 Tampa Tuesday tasting night – blind tasting, courtesy of Degarth.
Pours brown with tan head. The aroma is caramel backed up by oak and mild smoke followed by some chemical notes. The taste has a lot of wood, bourbon and burnt notes and faint roastiness. There’s also an odd chemical note mixing with the wood. Hmm. Really takes away from the enjoyment of the beer.
