The aroma is sweet with primary notes of roasted coffee, but also a faint note of butter. The flavor is sweet roasted combined with light notes of malt, coffee, and vegetables. Neat, creamy beige head. Malty, lightly burned aroma perhaps with a touch of coffee. Perhaps a whiff of butter also. Medium-bodied with lots of roasted malt. Lightly burned, bitter finish. Luckily that touch of butter never made it to the flavour. 170406 kp (8396), Woodstock, Georgia, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | May 29, 2002 Black. Very coffeeish aroma. Slightly thin body. lots of coffee, which I usually don’t go for, but this is a quality roast, with none of the vegetal flavours found in some other coffee beers. Smoothly drinkable. fiulijn (7150), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Nov 24, 2004 Black body, ever so slightly tinged red around the edges, topped by medium tan head. Aroma is strong roasty coffee, light chocolate. Taste is mild sweet, roasty coffee, light cherry. Watery medium body, some creaminess. I guess I want more sweetness to balance out the strong roastiness, but overall I did not like this one that much. Emil (6074), Copenhagen, Denmark

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Jun 20, 2008 A Sim rate (bottle from American Beer Distributors, Brooklyn, NY): Aroma gets a high score because it smells like coffee and I love coffee! It’s got a good mix of coffee and alcohol that makes me want to keep sniffing. Looks understandably opaque black but no head or lace. Slight letdown. Flavour is very roasty. Coffee and burnt toast. Ends quickly and not quite rich or deep enough. Palate is a complete letdown. Nothing stout about it. This could just as easily be water. Overall, I quite like it though. But then again, I am a java head!
