Commercial Description:
An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses. New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

Slight taste of Budweiser apple. Overall, fairly bland beer with little going for it. Served at a colleague’s home. Left half unfinished.

My deepest apologies to those with celiac disease. this was truly an experience that I would not wish on anyone. Strong sorghum taste, and makes my mouth feel like I just rinsed it with hydrogen peroxide. Given the gluten free beer options that I have tried thus far I recommend drinking rum.

What the hell were the fellows at Lakefront thinking when they put this weird shit together? Were they simply trying to tap into the "wheat allergic" crowd? Looks like piss and tastes like a bland piece of white bread soaked in tap water.

As a gluten intolerant person myself, i was fairly impressed with this beer. Gluten free beers may never be as good as a real beer with barley or wheat, but in the mean time this is a viable substitute.

Found this one bottled at the Extra Value Liquor Store in North Aurora, Illinois. Bottled, so didn’t get a good look at the color. A very nutty and complex nose, with a bit of nougaty sweetness. Flavor is very unusual. Kind of biscuity. I don’t really know how to describe it. Sharp but balanced finish. I would be interested in sampling it again.

Tasted 5/25/08. 12oz bottle. Filtered with a dark golden hue. White ring of head. Aromas of honey, rubbery and wheat chaff. Nutty and caramel notes. Medium bodied with a nice effervescence. Dry malts with an odd popcorn and pretzel flavor. Bright floral yeast character. Mild hops. Tart and grainy. Touch honey and citrus. Mildly burnt. Toasty and nutty. Citrus. As far as Gluten Free beers go, it’s quality. Though odd...

Bottle. Sweet grainy aroma - that is unmistakably sorghum, very strong and intimidating, with some reminders of Thanksgiving table scents. Sickly pale golden body with a scant white head. Terrible, terrible taste - it’s a bit difficult to describe - stale, grainy, and gamey, with all the worst headache-inducing off-flavors of a bumwine minus any of the good childish fruity flavors. Medium body feels sludgy, with subtle alcohol. Unbelievably NASTY.
