Commercial Description:
An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses. New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

I can’t believe it’s not wheat! Actually, it’s a pretty bland attempt to fit in, however if I couldn’t handle gluten like my friend who gave me a sip, I’d probably be pretty happy to find this beverage. It’s basically an atempt at macro swill, so if you don’t like that, don’t bother (other than to say you tried it).

I tried. This was just aweful in my opinion, something about this flavor just hit me and I just couldn’t even put a dent in this glass. Drain-pours are rare with me, but this I had to. This bottle only spared the fate of the drain because my girlfriend, who doesn’t like most beers, actually liked it. Foul herbal flavor, bitter funky finish. Nothing I liked.

I have to say that this was more like wine in the mouth - not much carbonation. Having been oin the farm, I caught the plentyful sorghum aftertaste. Should have called it New Grossed.

A strange, but not unpleasant aroma. Something of yeast, fruit and honey. Pale brassy color with a frothy white head that laced a very little. Something of a berry aroma as the glass approaches the lips. Near medium mouthfeel. There is indeed a cideriness here. Maybe with a bit of citrus. It does tend towards sour rather than sweet. Leaves something of a herb/veg mouth coat. Finishes with no bitter and a little citrus sour in the back of the mouth. Probably an acquired taste, but really not a bad thing.

Body-medium honey, almost flat looking-just a thin ring of bubbles around the glass. Nose-apple juice, grape, very fruity. Taste-apple, plastic, cidery, light band-aid. Reminds me of some of the wildly fermented French ciders that I have enjoyed (just in the elastic quality). Tastes more like apple cider than a beer.

Bottle. Orange, honey and white pepper aroma. Bright yellow with a nice big head. Lemon-orange malt with moderate carbonation. Light fruity beer - wish it had more sorghum flavor personally, however sorghum isn’t exactly a flavor most people like.

12 oz. bottle. Aroma was of sour candy. Gold body with not much of a head somewhat flat. Flavor was like a sweet candy cough syrup but not as bad as it lokks as I write this. Finish was like drinking apple juice.
