Commercial Description:
An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses. New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

This is a beer? Smelled like vinegar, sake, and adjuncts. No head, copper and straw yellow in color. Not so bad. Just not my bag, but it gets points for originality. At least it didn’t lie about putting rice in its beer like Budweiser et al.

Lakefront New Grist Sorghum Beer 12 oz bottle Moderate pour in a mug. Brewed 2nd week February 07, gristled 05/07. Poured a clear yellow with an average white fizzy head. Smelt of moderate crisp apples and vinegar. Taste was upfront strong sour apple cider and acetic white wine vinegar with a light breadiness followed by a moderate sourness and a light but distinct weird grain taste on a short finish. Palate was light bodied, watery, fizzy and moderately mouth puckering. Overall, a very odd beer. The grain taste on the finish is very interesting and attracts curiosity, but it’s so sour, like a Belgian wild ale. Is this normal? It’s very different and I can see myself growing to like it, but not at that price (10.99/6pk). Just weird. Fun to try once in a great while, just for the extremely odd experience.

color is a lemony gold with a THIN white head.has a strong smell that’s hard to place. kinda yeasty? almost has a faint belgian ale aroma, maybe its estery. taste is crisp and bright easy drinking with light hops on the end. funky sorghum flavor is present as well as some white rice. not bad for a sorghum beer.

bottle - Pours clear, piss yellow with a thin head. It smells like sugar and rice. It’s sweet, watery, highly carbonated, and tastes rather like a weak apple cider. In short, it sucks. I never thought I’d say this, but Anheuser Busch does it better (sorghum beer, that is).

Bottle, Lager glass. kind of fruity aroma, kind of champagne like nose. Taste reminds me of apple cider, mixed with champagne and cream. Kind of sour as well. Strange I am not sure if I dig it so much. Maybe it should have a greater addition of hops. Bought it as a sinlge and would probably not buy more, leave some a taste of sweetend condensed milk on the back of the tongue. Has some characteristics of a flemish sour. Like a mild Duchess with a marshmellow finish.
