Commercial Description:
An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses. New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

Bottle, from trade with jimbowood. Not much aroma. Lemon, sourdough, a dry champagne thing. Pale golden yellow color, like ginger ale. Small head that faded quickly to nothing. Bitter flavor. Reminds me of a dry cider or a sparkling wine. Lite oily creamy mouth feel, dry finish. Well, maybe if I were told it was sparkling wine I’d think more of it, but as a golden/blonde ale not so much. Thanks jimbowood.

Bottle: Gold color with really no head. Sweet, cheap perfume aroma and perhaps a berry flavored girl’s lip gloss. In some ways, it doesn’t even taste like beer. Sweeter flavors of tangified fruits. The feel is pretty thin and doesn’t leave an unpleasant flavor in your mouth, at least. Well, if I was allergic to gluten and barley, I guess this would be ok. But, most likely, I would just stop drinking beer if this was my only option.

Bottle pours a pale orange with a fizzy coarse white head that is but a fleeting memory after a few seconds. Aroma is of leather and fruity. Tastes sour and cardboardy. Fruity and sweet. Of apples and pears as well. Verry odd. Not as bad as I feard, which is about all I can say. Thanks to Pinkzambia for sharing this one. I hear spooning with porcupines is becoming quite popular.

Pours extremely pale, light yellow with a white head that quickly disappears (looks more like ginger ale than beer). Aroma smells like bread dough and yeast with hints of acid. The flavor and finish is strangely dry, not very malty and virtually no hops. I have a friend who is Celiac who gave a bottle to me. I think this beer is for Celiac’s who are used to drinking bland and uninteresting beers (i.e. industrial macro-brew lagers). A Celiac who was a beer afficianado before embarking upon their gluten-free regiment would be sorely disappointed. I have had other gluten-free beers that were much better (though they weren’t made from sorghum and rice as was this beer).

(Bottled the second week of August 2006) The beer’s color is a hazy yellow, the nose is slightly acidic, sort of ciderish. The palate is crisp, acidic, and light. There really isn’t much character of any kind. I guess this beer is designed for a niche market like their organic ESB. I have seen the organic ESB in the MD market also, but I would like to see the other more interesting Lakefront brews make it to this area.

I’ve found this beer to be a disappointment. Lakefront Brewery usually does better than this. The beer has a nice clear golden color but the little head dies off immediately. The aroma has a sour smell and the first taste is of band-aids. This beer reminds me of a poorly made home brew.

Pours a transparent sparkling golden with a thin, wispy-lacing covering of white head. Grainy, slightly peppery floral aroma has a touch of citrus and noble hops. Body starts faintly sweet with some citrus tartness and a thin palate toward a fairly clean finish.

Thanks to Degarth. Pours a clear golden, thin white head. For a beer with no barley, it’s not bad. Just a crisp refreshing lager style beer. Pretty much no hops and no other real flavors happening some slight sweetness. Really don’t know what to say it’s a better tasting pale lager.
