Commercial Description:
An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses. New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

Bottle. Pours a nice lively yellow with a high white head. Aroma is a floral lemon with sweet chaimomile. Flavor is a mediciny butter with lemon air freshener and a bitter, almost mouthpuckering, finish. Average mouthfeel that provides a touch of interest but fades too quickly. Can’t say I would ever drink this again but for a sorghum beer, it’s not too shabby.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a pale straw yellow color with a small white head that faded quickly. The aroma was faint with notes of rice and corn. The flavor was mild but bitter, tangy, tart and a little grainy with undertones of beets and rhubarb. The finish was short, tart and bitter. Bland yet odd.

Zingermanns Roadhouse on November 28, 2008. Very light amber color. No real head, but slow carbonation. Sweet aroma, pungent, bitter, and light flavor. Cant really place the flavor. Good, one of the best all-sorghum beers Ive had.

Well, not what I was hoping for. Golden yellow color with a white head. Sour, not my thing. It would have to be real cold and I would have to drink it real fast, as long as monkey snot were not available.

Bottle. Pours gold with a thin white head. Strange cherry-pie medicinal sweetness. The flavor is almost biscuity with medicinal cherry-like sweetness. Not awful, but not that good.

This was initally delicious when it was fresh out of the fridge, however it got a weird breakfast cereal flavor after it got warmer. It was not particularly easy to drink as there was a rubbery bitterness about halfway through.

Crushed with Jakebra at the brewery. Nothing offensive in this brew, but also nothing to it at all. Hardly any flavor, no body, a bit of sourness in the finish make this one a beer to forget.
